Zambia: Rise of Homophobia prompted by Christian fundamentalists - by MUBANGA Chan, www.europe-solidaire.org, 26 February 2010 : http://www.europe-solidaire.org/spip.php?article16594 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"The move by the National Constitutional Conference (NCC) to adopt a clause that directly discriminates against homosexuals has caused fear and uncertainty in the Zambian gay community. Over the past two years, Zambia has undertaken a constitution making process with a view of adopting a constitution for all Zambians that could withstand the test of time." <br><br> Zambia is a Christian nation and it shall continue to be so because it is part of our constitution. And acts such as homosexuality are not part of the Christian norm. In 2005, this house passed stiff laws against homosexuality. For people having carnal knowledge of each other against the order of nature the punishment is a minimum of 15 years imprisonment. If you have carnal knowledge of an animal you serve a minimum of 25 years. Amidst laughter and cheering, vice president Kunda went on to say, ?I know there are some prominent people in our society who are practicing homosexuality, some of them are engineers, some are lawyers and some are journalists.?

UPR: Iraq Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network United Nations Human Rights Council, Geneva. 11th June 2010. - Presented by Rowland Jide Macaulay on 06/11/10 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"UNAMI reports a number of assassinations of homosexuals in Iraq, many of which are unreported by family members for fear of further abuse. Stakeholders have also documented widespread extrajudicial killings of persons on the basis of their actual or presumed sexual orientation. Many men assumed to be gay have been mutilated and their bodies dumped in the streets, while others have been forced to flee Iraq after receiving death threats." <br><br> "While we welcome the government?s commitment to take action on these matters, we are dismayed by the rejection of recommendations 23,24,25 & 26 in pargraph 83, which call on the government to investigate all allegations of persecution based on sexual orientation and gender identity and ensure that the authours of violence are brought to justice. As UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon recently stated ?We cannot stay quiet when people are denied fundamental rights, whatever their race or faith or age or gender or sexual orientation?.

Kyrgyz Come Out - Institute for War & Peace Reporting on 3/16/10: http://www.iwpr.net/report-news/kyrgyz-come-out (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Homophobia is rife in Kyrgyzstan with gay women particularly susceptible to
discrimination.
It was an unpleasant incident at a Bishkek cafe that helped convince Sasha Kim
that Kyrgyz lesbians had been silent for too long.
She was among several women ordered out of the cafe when two of their
number were spotted by the other patrons exchanging a kiss. They were told the
restaurant was a ?respectable establishment? and no place for gays and lesbians.

Turkmen Lesbian Granted Asylum - Columbia Law School on 5/1/07: http://www.law.columbia.edu/media_inquiries/news_events/2007/may07/sexuality_law (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Today, Columbia Law School?s Sexuality and
Gender Law Clinic secured asylum for a Turkmen woman who feared
persecution in this mostly Muslim country because she is a lesbian and because
of her political opinions. The grant of asylum, issued by the Department of
Homeland Security, is believed to be the first-ever issued to a lesbian from
Turkmenistan. The woman granted asylum in the U.S. prefers to remain
anonymous as she continues to fear persecution of her family members in
Turkmenistan.
<br>
?This victory is particularly important because, to our knowledge, it is the first
asylum grant to a Turkmen lesbian, said Professor Suzanne B. Goldberg, who
directs the Clinic. ?The intensive research and information about conditions for
lesbians and gay men in Turkmenistan gathered by the students on this case is
now available to anyone from Turkmenistan seeking asylum because of their
sexual orientation, she said.

Same-sex partnership bill faces uphill battle in Croatia - by Advocate.com on 3/18/06: http://www.advocate.com/article.aspx?id=34599 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Croatian ruling party lawmakers in Zagreb on Friday criticized an opposition draft bill proposing that gay couples be entitled to register their partnerships, insisting that same-sex relations are against God and nature. The heated debate, during which several lawmakers made hostile comments about gays, indicated that the bill, drafted by two lawmakers from the left-center parties, will certainly be rejected by the chamber, where the ruling party controls the majority.

Small pride marches staged in Moscow despite ban- Rex Wockner International News # 841 06/07/10 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"LGBT people managed to stage two small, brief pride marches in Moscow on
May 29 despite another ban from Mayor Yuri Luzhkov, who says gay marches
are "satanic." <br><br> "The guerrilla-style hit-and-run Moscow gay pride march was over before
the police arrived," said British gay activist Peter Tatchell, who joined
the march. "When they turned up, officers scurried around aimlessly,
searching for protesters to arrest." <br><br>
"All morning the gay pride organizers fed the police a steady stream of
false information, via blogs and websites, concerning the location of the
parade," Tatchell explained. "They suggested that it would take place
outside the EU (European Union) Commission's offices. As a result, the
police put the whole area in total lockdown, closing nearby streets and
metro stations, in a bid to prevent protesters assembling there." <br><br>
"The authorities also tailed journalists, in hopes of finding the parade,
said Andy Thayer of Chicago's Gay Liberation Network, who took part in the
march."

No Going Back- By Nathanael Miles, Stonewall, 05/30/10: http://www.stonewall.org.uk/what_we_do/research_and_policy/2874.asp (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Stonewall has published the report No going back: Lesbian and gay people and the asylum system (2010), which is based on interviews with asylum-seekers and UK Border Agency decision-makers. It found almost systemic homophobia in our asylum system resulting in legitimate lesbian, gay and bisexual asylum seekers regularly being refused sanctuary. <br><br>
The report revealed that officials rely on inaccurate information and outdated ideas about gay people and admit that they don?t know how to question them appropriately. As a result lesbians and gay men who?ve been raped, tortured and threatened with death are being returned to their countries ? in many cases to face further persecution.
The report details how lesbian, gay and bisexual people seeking asylum experience significant and specific disadvantages as a direct consequence of their sexual orientation.
