"There is no authoritative figure for the homosexual population in Iran. However, recently published data based only on psychological reports of recruits for compulsory military service or for sex change operations put the number of gay men at 200,000 in a country of 66 million, Ghahraman said. Sex changes are legal in Iran, and many gays resort to them as the only way to live with their partners or avoid the harsh penalties."

Despite these advances, however, LGBT persons continue to face discrimination and human rights violations based on their gender identity and sexual orientation. The overall culture in Mexico remains highly repressive in its attitudes towards LGBTI persons. The persistence of discriminatory sentiment towards the LGBTI community is illustrated by a recent poll of the Mexican population, which showed that 48.4% would never live with an LGB person and that 11.6% would never hire one.7

There have been multiple instances of discrimination and violence towards LGBTI individuals in Mexico over past few years, including hate crimes and serious abuses by state authorities, some of which are documented below. LGBT persons in Mexico face a serious threat of violence. One recent study has found that between 1995 and 2007, 464 homophobic and transphobic hate crimes were committed in Mexico.8 Another study indicates that 76.4% of LGBT persons have been subjected to physical violence because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, and that 53.3% had been assaulted in public spaces.9 Additionally, another survey has indicated that 30% of LGB persons in Mexico had been discriminated against by police and that 20% had been assaulted by police.10 Travesti and transgender persons are subjected to mass detentions, extortion, and physical abuse at the hands of police and military officials. LGBT persons face widespread employment discrimination in both the public and the private sector.

They could not tolerate their son to be a female. What I am telling you here is not a joke or exaggeration. A friend of mine, who is also transsexual, was poisoned by her family. They did not accept their son to be a female. I had to leave my family in order not to be killed. I had a surgical operation in a place that there were no the hygiene and with the minimum operational equipment. Acknowledgments
This shadow report on the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals in Uzbekistan was drafted by Labrys Kyrgyzstan, and Lauren Almquist, under the supervision of Mindy Roseman, Academic Director of the Human Rights Program, Harvard Law School, with support from and coordination by Global Rights.

Despite these protections established by the Constitution and Uzbekistan?s accession to the ICCPR, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals (LGBT) in Uzbekistan have been denied basic human rights as a result of their sexual orientation and gender identity. Uzbekistan?s laws and policies violate a number of rights laid out in the ICCPR with regards to its LGBT citizens. In particular the country?s criminalization of same sex activities leads to severe discrimination, abuse by law enforcement officials, and drastic curtailment of NGO activities. Uzbekistan is consequently in violation of Articles 2(1), 26 (Non-discrimination), 17 (Freedom from Arbitrary Interference with Privacy, Family, Home), 7 (Freedom from Torture and Cruel, Inhumane or Degrading Treatment), 21 (Right of Peaceful Assembly), and 22 (Freedom of Association).

1120. HIV Frontlines: HIV/AIDS and Homophobia in Jamaica- By Bonnie Goldman on www.thebody.com on 02/03/10: http://www.thebody.com/content/whatis/art55281.html?ts=pf (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
The first one is the way in which the popular culture and music have repeatedly articulated very disturbing ideas about gays and quite violent lyrics and so on. The violence of the lyrics and the acceptance of it by certain segments of the population leave somebody who is gay with a constant sense of anxiety about the way in which they're viewed and they'll be treated if they come out. So it's a kind of living threat. And there've been so many instances of violence against men who sleep with men.

Yet there's another side of this thing that is worth paying attention to. The gay community has been far more articulate and present, and in many ways, radical in its resistance to the violence that has been perpetrated against them. That presence is part of what I believe to be a cultural shift that is taking place within a very conservative society. There are many gay people who have left Jamaica simply because it was just untenable to continue to live there comfortably and freely.

That complicates issues of how we deal with HIV. If being gay becomes something that one does not want to be attached to, then there's a reluctance for those people to come out of the closet, or to even just come out to be tested for HIV/AIDS. It's a hard community to then reach. That creates tremendous problems. The numbers are disturbing. Almost 30% of men who sleep with men in Jamaica are estimated to have HIV.
