Africa: Make those homosexuals disappear! - by DJAMEL BELAYACH, en.afrik.com on 03/26/10: http://en.afrik.com/article17241.html (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"The stigmatization of homosexuals in Africa does not only hold legal consequences. It also poses a serious threat to public health due to the generally accepted fact among HIV/AIDS organizations that it prevents the development of appropriate programs for HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment. These anti-gay laws exist despite reports from studies showing higher prevalence levels of the disease among men who have sex with men compared to the overall male population. A study by researchers at the University of Oxford on the risk of infection by the AIDS virus among the male population in Sub-Saharan Africa between 1984 and 2004 suggested that the "stigma" homosexuals are subject to cut access to prevention programs."

Latvia: Crucible of Hates- By Tge Guardian-06/01/07-http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2007/jun/01/gayrights.poland (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
This document was provided by Immigration Equality, New York, NY<br><br> As a compromise, Riga Pride organisers held a private indoor rally at the Berg hotel, following an Anglican church service. The church was surrounded by a group of religious extremists, old women and skinheads. "We tried to leave by the back door but they had put guards there. We tried to move through them but groups of people started to run at us shouting, 'You deserve to die,' and 'Leave our land.' They were carrying bags, which could have had anything in them," remembers Jolanta Chianovica, a half-French, half-Latvian activist.<br>The bags were full of human excrement, which was hurled at the mostly female congregation. Meanwhile, more counterdemonstrators had swarmed to the Berg hotel, where they were refusing to let Pride supporters in or out. "I saw two girls trying to leave and people spat in their faces directly in front of the police but they did nothing. When they saw the police weren't interfering to stop the violence, they felt they could do whatever they liked. That was really frightening," says Chianovica.

Annual Report on the Position of LGBTTIQ Population in Serbia for 2008 - by Dragana Vuckovic on www.labris.org.rs on 05/11/09: http://www.labris.org.rs/en/what-we-do/publications/the-2008-annual-report-on-the-position-of-lgbt-population-in-serbia-download-pdf-170kb.html (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
The assault on the participants of Queer Beograd festival and the first court verdict due to the threats to a gay activist - are the key events of the 2008 when it comes to violence and discrimination against gay/lesbian population in Serbia. Analysing 2008,
after the newly elected government, a few significant steps ahead can be distinguished in terms of gay/lesbian rights. Apart from
the before-mentioned verdict, certainly a very important event has been the ban of the right-wing and fascist organisations rally
in October, as well as some improvements in legislature which can contribute the protection from discrimination. An improved cooperation between nongovernmental organisations for lesbian and gay human rights and institutions such as Ombudsman's office and the Ministry for human and minority rights has led to the
heightened visibility of these organisations' work in public, but also the visibility of lesbian and gay population on the whole as well. It has resulted in that in the atmosphere of increased visibility, both violence and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation happen more frequently. You have before you a summary of such instances happening throughout 2008 that Labris has
managed to record.

It may be 40 degrees but Belgrade is a cool city. The boulevards are full of smartly dressed people checking each other out and watching the world go by from the terraces of cafés. But while Belgrade may at first glance appear like any other city basking in the summer heat the shadows of the war in the - as it was then - Former Yugoslavia - are never far away . Certainly Serbia's dark side did not disappear with Milosovic and you don't have to scratch very hard to find it .

The 2006 Annual Report on the Position of LGBT People in Serbia - by Dragana Vuckovic on www.labris.org.rs on 02/14/07: http://www.labris.org.rs/en/what-we-do/publications/annual-report.html (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
This document was provided by Immigration Equality, New York, NY<br><br>
Discrimination against same sex oriented individuals in Serbia is difficult to follow and document because of immense homophobia and all the fear and lack of trust persons of different than heterosexual sexual orientation have and this discrimination often remains invisible. On the other hand, sexual orientation is one of the rare bases of diversity which is not accepted in our society as a basic human right. Many politicians use hate speech in their public statements and discriminate against gays and lesbians and the existing legislations do not provide adequate protection from homophobic violence and discrimination.
