Urgency Required - Gay and Lesbian Rights are Human Rights- a report about LGBT rights in the context of human rights.- Hivos, Edited by Ireen Dubel and André Hielkema, 01/31/10: http://www.hivos.net/Hivos-Knowledge-Programme/Themes/Urgency-Required (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
[This book is an expanded English version of Urgentie Geboden (in Dutch), ISBN 978-90-6665-
967-4, that also appeared as Issue 33 / 34 (June 2008) of the Journal for Humanistics (ISSN
1567-7117)]

In 2009 homophobia appears to be the last accepted prejudice, where racism is rejected, anti-Semitism is condemned, and the oppression of women has lost its legitimacy.

Urgency Required. Gay and Lesbian Rights are Human Rights analyses the legal and political situation in different countries around the globe. Personal accounts from people living in those countries are also included. Two chapters take a closer look at significant developments in the history of LGBT and human rights politics like the Montreal Declaration of Human LGBT Rights and the Yogyakarta Principles, and theoretical discussion of terminology and concepts isn't neglected either. Urgency Required is certainly worth a read for anyone interested in LGBT politics.

Syria: Victory in Gay Asylum Case - by White & Case LLP: A Global Law Firm, on Globally Noted - Pro Bono Matters, 04/06/09: http://www.whitecase.com/publications_04062009_1/ (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"White & Case recently won a case for our pro bono client Mr. A, a young man from Syria who sought asylum in the United States for his past persecution and fear of future persecution related to his sexual orientation. Mr. A was referred to White & Case through Immigration Equality, an organization specializing in LGBT asylum cases."

"Although Mr. A had not suffered persecution at the hands of the government of Syria, White & Case was able to show that he would never be able to live openly as a gay man in his native country and would always face the risk of persecution because of his sexual orientation. As part of Mr. A's application for asylum, White & Case provided expert affidavits demonstrating that homosexuality is a crime in Syria, punishable by a term of three years in prison. We were also able to show that homosexuality carries a strong stigma in Syrian society, which could potentially motivate Mr. A's family or community to punish him for the shame he would bring to his family because of his sexual orientation. White & Case further demonstrated that in the event that Mr. A's family learned of his sexual orientation and decided to restore the family's honor by punishing Mr. A, the Syrian government would likely not step in to protect him."
