"For days afterward, Cunningham said an angry mob gathered on his lawn hurling rocks and bricks and calling them "batty boys" ? a Jamaican slang term for gay. Eventually, the pair grabbed what they could and fled on foot."

Cunningham had to revisit painful moments of running from mobs in Jamaica. Even the police would point him out for persecution, he said. In successfully arguing Cunningham's case for asylum, Weinberg also said Jamaica's sodomy laws banning sex between men and "dancehall" music ? whose lyrics often advocate violence against gays ? made life for Cunningham unbearable."

[Brazil] "During his asylum hearing, Azevedo had to recall violent episodes in Brazil when he and a group of transsexuals were attacked in bars. He recalled a transgender woman set on fire. Each time Azevedo said he went to police about an attack or a threat, the officers didn't even bother to file a report."

This document was provided by Immigration Equality, New York, NY

The AIDS epidemic claimed an estimated 24000 (16000-40000) lives in the Caribbean in 2005, making it the leading cause of death among adults aged 15-44 years. A total of 300 000 (200 000-510 000) people are living with HIV in the Caribbean, including the 30 000 (17 000-71 000) people who became infected in 2005. In the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) region 240 000 (150 000-450 000) people are living with HIV, including the 25 000 (12 000-65 000) people who acquired the virus in 2005. More than 20 000 (13 000-36 000) people died of AIDS in the past year in this region.

This document was provided by Immigration Equality, New York, NY

The Caribbean is hardly a homogenous region - HIV prevalence rates range from one percent in Barbados, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Suriname, to more than three percent in Haiti. The main bright spot is Cuba, where thanks to aggressive prevention campaigns and greater gender equality, prevalence is yet to reach 0.2 percent.
But overall, according to UNAIDS, at the end of last year, an estimated 330,000 people were living with HIV and AIDS in the Caribbean. Some 37,000 people were newly infected during 2005, and there were 27,000 deaths due to AIDS.
AIDS is now the leading cause of death among 15-44 year-olds in the region. Which is why, experts say, reaching out to young people through popular media like television is essential to reversing the spread of the disease.

This document was provided by Immigration Equality, New York, NY

Last April, just as the winter season was ending, Smith, his boyfriend Justin Swenson and a friend, Dick Jefferson, were drinking at the Caravanserai Beach Resort on the Dutch side of the island of St Maarten/St Martin. It was 3am and Smith had his arm around Swenson.
"We were not kissing or making out," Swenson later told the Miami Herald. Suddenly several patrons, Swenson says, began screaming and shouting "butt boys" at them.
The bouncer told the gay Americans to leave. A man tossed a chair at them as they were leaving and, as they were walking through the Caravanserai's property, which is very dark at night, a car hit Smith, knocking him over. Swenson ran for help and when he returned he found his boyfriend covered in blood. The attackers had bludgeoned him and Jefferson with a tire iron.
Jefferson suffered a fractured skull and needed a titanium plate inserted into his head. Smith?s skull was fractured more extensively: surgeons removed pieces of bone in his brain and since then he has had difficulty talking.

This document was provided by Immigration Equality, New York, NY

"It now seems it is okay when you are 'provoked' or made advances to, especially if it is of a homosexual nature, to stab that person 42 times because you will get off", protested Gregory Singh in Friday's Guardian. That's the common belief. Especially since Clyde Lambert's killer was set free because the police couldn?t disprove that Lambert hadn't tried to bugger his killer. So when Trevor ?Burn Boots? Smith shot his friend in a drunken rage, Smith?s first panic-stricken "excuse" was that his friend had attempted to seduce him. Christopher Lynch was killed on September 5, 1997."
