Press Release on Homosexuality in Ghana by Coalition Against Homophobia in Ghana/ IGLHRC, www.iglhrc.org, on 08/04/11: http://www.iglhrc.org/cgi-bin/iowa/article/takeaction/partners/1429.html (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Recently, the President, John Evans Atta Mills, denounced homosexuality and promised to take steps, although unspecified, to combat it. Thus, it is no surprise that in this context, the Western Region Minister, Paul Evans Aidoo, made an order for the ?immediate arrest of all homosexuals in the (Western) region? last week according to Myjoyonline.com.<br><br>
CAHG vehemently denounces these types of sensationalist, unfounded, and bigoted attacks against LGBT Ghanaians, who are brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, daughters and sons of Ghanaian families just like any other Ghanaians. LGBT people are in every conceivable walk of life and have existed throughout history. Contrary to unsubstantiated and speculative remarks that homosexuals are ?evil?, ?filthy?, and ?ungodly?, LGBT people are our family members, co-workers, worshippers, taxpayers, voters, media people, pastors and lovers who deserve the same rights and protection under the Ghanaian Constitution as anyone else. <br><br>
Unfortunately, a few people with religious, political, and institutional power continue to use their privilege to perpetuate hate and violence against homosexuals with the support of the criminal code 1960, Act 29, which criminalizes ?unnatural carnal knowledge?--ironically a ?western? concept imported to Ghana during British colonization of the country. If these anti-homosexual forces care about the future of Ghana, then the coalition calls on them to do something about issues that actually pose a threat to Ghana?s future such as poverty, women?s rights, class inequalities, environmental destruction, educational rights, and job opportunities. Addressing such issues would be more productive for the country than utilizing fear- mongering tactics to divide Ghanaian people from their LGBT family members and colleagues.

Repunta la homofobia en Veracruz / Homophobia resurfaces in Veracruz- by www.cronicadigital.com.mx on 08/04/11: http://www.cronicadigital.com.mx/nota.php?id=2081 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
<br>=================================================================<br><br>Homophobia in Veracruz is a latent problem which continues costing victims, pointed out the activist Silvia
Susana Jiménez Galicia, before the climate of hate which exists in society towards sexual minorities and
the prevailing impunity. <br><br>
Public ministries don't do anything; then they say, ah it's a little faggot, that's not important or they say that
they are crimes of passion.
Silvia Susana Jiménez emphasized that a persistence of these crimes committed brutally and hatefully has
been detected. "They don't only look to take away one's life but to make them suffer, since they use sharp
instruments or even rocks," as has been documented in many cases. <br><br>
And contrary to what occurs with femicides, which have been made public after pressure from the families
of the victims and social activists, in the case of the murders due to homophobia, these remain hidden
"because at times even the family of the victim is ashamed to talk about this subject."

UAE public enemy No. 1: Lesbians The United Arab Emirates launches a campaign against the "fourth sex." - By Tracy Clark-Flory, www.salon.com on 03/18/09: http://www.salon.com/life/broadsheet/2009/03/18/manly_women (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Officials say that lesbians, euphemistically known as "manly" women or the "fourth sex," harass "normal" women, according to the Los Angeles Times. The government isn't interested in cracking down on harassment, though, so much as they want to eradicate inadequate femininity. The Times reports that "the campaign, which involves educational experts and psychologists, will include awareness workshops to explain the phenomenon and ways to face it." Naji Hay of the ministry of social affairs told a local TV station: "The phenomenon of manly women has become apparent in society ... These women are against the normal nature of females. Their deviant behavior threatens other normal girls. This is why we had to launch this initiative to protect society from this menace."

Both civil law and Sharia criminalize homosexual activity. Under Sharia the death penalty is the punishment for individuals who engage in consensual homosexual activity. There were no prosecutions for homosexual activity during the year. In 2009 there were reports that the government deported and sentenced individuals to prison for openly homosexual activity. <br><br>
Under the law, cross-dressing is a punishable offense. The government deported cross-dressing foreign residents and referred citizens to public prosecutors. At times the government subjected persons to psychological treatment and counseling for homosexual activity.

Analysis: Understanding the drivers of homophobia in Ghana - by www.plusnews.org on 08/01/11: http://www.plusnews.org/report.aspx?reportid=93387 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
DAKAR, 1 August 2011 (PlusNews) - Recent condemnation of homosexuality by religious and political leaders in Ghana has led to a climate of fear preventing men who have sex with men (MSM) from accessing vital health services, say local NGOs. <br><br> ?It has brought about a lot of fear and stigma for the people. It is difficult to organize programmes,? Cobbinah said. ?It is very difficult for people to walk freely on the street? The call for arrest has really pushed people down.? <br><br>
He added that one of his colleagues was recently accused of being gay and beaten up by a group of men.
<br><br>
Cobbinah said numbers had dropped at a regular HIV peer education programme that once had more than 20 people attending; two weeks ago only half the people came, and last week no one came, he told IRIN on 27 July. ?They said, ?If we come, we might be arrested.'?

According to Jjuuko, the
implications of criminalising homosexuality include criminalising just
the identity, relegating LGBTIs to second-class citizenship, police
harassment, possibilities of blackmail and being accused of recruiting
children. The options that remain for LGBTI persons when faced with
the prospects of being prosecuted are to get out of the country, stay
in the country and get harassed, arrested or prosecuted, and become
internally displaced - which usually means relocation to a part of the
country where one is not known and staying discrete while there.

Treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals ranged from ambivalent tolerance to staunch homophobia. While no law criminalizes homosexuality, members of the LGBT community continued to be discriminated against in all areas of society, including health, education, and work, since no law protects individuals against discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Transgender individuals were particularly at risk of being victims of violence. <br><br>
Persons with HIV/AIDS faced discrimination in the workplace and elsewhere. According to the UN agency UNAIDS, an estimated 52,000 to 71,000 persons were infected with the disease. A study by the Network of Persons Living with HIV, Profamilia, and Alianza Solidaria revealed that, among the sample of persons living with HIV who were interviewed, 62 percent reported being the subject of gossip, 30 percent were the victims of verbal aggression, 27 percent were the victims of verbal threats, and 14 percent were victims of attacks or physical threats.

Honduras; Batalla contra la homofobia -Casi 40 personas LGBT han sido asesinadas los últimos dos años. / Battle against homophobia- Almost 40 LGBT people have been murdered in the last two years- by Alejandro F. Ludeña, www.noticiasaliadas.org, 07/22/11: http://www.noticiasaliadas.org/articles.asp?art=6432 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
<br>================================================================== <br><br>
Sadly, homophoic hatred in Honduras is strongly deeply rooted. Attacks against homosexuals were already
worrisome in Honduras much before the violent coup. <br><br>
"At this moment in time there is nothing concrete to overcome the discrimination that we suffer," he declared
to "Noticias Aliadas." <br><br>
There's no doubt that this battle for tolerance which frees the LGBT community does not only affect its
members. In a society established on the disrespect of the differences and the authoritarianism of the
political leaders, the battle for respect of sexual diversity is at the forefront of defeating intolerance. <br><br>
"It deals with a ?ght against all kinds of discrimination," stresses Banegas. "We are not only looking for
changes for our community, but for the whole fo the Honduran society."
