"Gays and Lesbians Association of Zimbabwe (GALZ) has a membership of 400. That does not by any means imply that Zimbabwe only has 400 gays and lesbians. Prejudice and discrimination make it extremely difficult for many people to come to terms with their sexual orientation. Reading through many of the hate filled posts in response to the article published by The Zimbabwe Times (TZT) entitled 'Gays and Lesbians Demand Recognition' on April 28, 2009, it is easy to understand why."

'You give them a penny and they will soon ask for a pound. Very soon they will be demanding that we recognise same sex marriages.'" <br><br>
"A reverend with the Anglican Church in suburban Harare who called them 'botty burglars' said homosexuality is an abomination and condemned in the Bible."

"Until recently, homosexuality was not illegal in Zimbabwe, although the statutes outlawed sodomy. However, a new law that came into force in August makes 'physical contact between males that would be regarded by a reasonable person as an indecent act' a criminal offence." <br><br>
"The country's small number of outspoken gays and lesbians - there are fewer than 200 fee-paying members of GALZ in a country of 11.5 million people - say the new law will harden public attitudes and make homosexuals' lives 'hellish'. A recent fundraising event for GALZ was cancelled after an organiser was beaten up at a nightclub where it was to be held. Tim Francis, not his real name, who was there when his colleague was attacked, said police refused even to take a statement once they realised the victim was gay."

"Most gay and lesbian people in Zimbabwe live in fear and are driven underground. This is blatant discrimination against a group of people whose only difference from the majority is in who they are attracted to sexually. And homosexuals do not choose to be homosexual just as heterosexuals do not choose to be heterosexual. Choosing to be gay or lesbian in Zimbabwe would be lunacy given the levels of disapproval shown by many elements of society."<br><br>

"LGBT people in Armenia suffer from a high level of hostility, discrimination, social exclusion, hate crimes and violence. Homophobia is deeply rooted in the Armenian society. Stigmatisation is so pervasive that most LGBT people are forced out of communities and deprived of any chance to openly express their sexual orientation or gender identity. And yet they are forced to come out and organise into associations and groups if the want to be able to stand up for who they are.<br><br>
The joint ILGA-Europe and COC report is the first of its kind to be published about same-sex relationships and LGBT people in Armenia. It explores identities, common human rights violations, the landscape of LGBT organising, health and HIV/AIDS, and relevant legal aspects. It also provides recommendations to the Armenian government, donors, LGBT activists and international organisations."

More than 32 homosexuals remained under arrest this weekend when two trucks of the special force of Oquendo, Old Havana, carried out a noisy arrest in the lower areas of the capital.<br><br>
"It's sad that the Cuban Police Force see us as delinquents or as a public threat, our biggest problem being homophobia", said Mariela Castro when she was the guest of honor at the Gay Pride March in London, only she wasn't brave enough to say that the homophobic weight hanging over the gay community on the island comes from the police forces and the governmental institutions.
