Iraq: IGLHRC Asks the Iraqi Government to Protect LGBT People, published on 04/17/09 on www.iglhrc.org : http://www.iglhrc.org/cgi-bin/iowa/article/takeaction/resourcecenter/889.html (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"Previous acts of anti-LGBT violence in Iraq include the April 2, 2009 murder of two men in the Sadr City neighborhood of Baghdad. An unidentified local official described these men as ?sexual perverts (Monharef Jensiyan) who were killed by members of their tribe to restore their family honor.? Prior to death, the men?s relatives had disowned them and they were also thrown out of their tribes. So far no one has claimed their bodies and the government has not launched an investigation into the case. These murders took place one week after Iraqi authorities unearthed the bodies of 4 men killed by gunshots in Sadr City on March 25. The words ?pervert? and ?son of a bitch? (jaravah: a derogatory term to describe homosexuals) were written on the chests of the victims. As part of this new wave of violence, a coffee house in Sadr City that was frequented by gay men has also been burnt down."

Iraqi Gay Murders Surge; World Finally Takes Note, published on 04/16/09 By: DOUG IRELAND, on www.gaycitynews.com : http://www.gaycitynews.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=20299642&BRD=2729&PAG=461&dept_id=568864&rfi=6 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"Ali Hili, the coordinator of Iraqi LGBT, who briefed Polis by telephone for his Iraqi trip, told Gay City News from London that "we have been able to confirm 63 more murders of gay people in Iraq just since December," bringing to nearly 600 the number of cases of LGBT Iraqis killed for their sexuality that his group has documented since the Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, the spiritual leader of all Iraqi Shiite Muslims, issued a death-to-all-gays fatwa in 2005. But, Hili added, "Since there are parts of Iraq where we have no correspondents or members, we are convinced that the actual number of gays killed in these last months since December is much higher." At the same time, the BBC reported last week that according to Amnesty International "in the last few weeks 25 boys and men are reported to have been killed in Baghdad because they were, or perceived to be, gay." In an unusual move, Amnesty International wrote to the Iraqi President, Nouri al-Maliki, demanding "urgent and concerted action" by his government to stop the killings."

Jorge Armenta Peñuelas (27) was the president of Lesbian and Gay Collective, in Nogales, Sonora, México. He was also running for a seat at the local Legislature on behalf of Convergencia Party. On June 1, 2003, Mr. Armenta and his partner, Ramón Armando Gutiérrez (33) were found murdered in their apartment. Their bodies showed signs of having been tortured as well. The Sonora Prosecutor Office called the murders "crimes" of passion," and in an attempt to stop further investigation, added that gay couples tend to be promiscuous and to have "many lovers." Activists and the local State Human Rights Commission demand that proper investigations be conducted, without misconceptions and prejudice. AS time passes, the inaction of the Prosecutor Office makes these cases harder to solve. Most crimes involving gay people remain unsolved and uninvestigated in Mexico and activists are afraid Armenta and Gutiérrez's murders will join the list.

Iraqi leaders attacked over spate of homophobic murders: Dozens of young men and boys killed by death squads in Baghdad - By Nigel Morris, Deputy Political Editor - www.independent.co.uk - 04/13/09 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Iraqi leaders are accused of turning a blind eye to a spate of murders of homosexuals after 25 young men and boys were killed in recent weeks.<br><br>
Gay groups claim the Iraqi government is giving tacit support to the death squads targeting young homosexuals who venture outdoors.<br><br>
In an unusual move, Amnesty International will today write to the Iraqi President, Nouri al-Maliki, demanding "urgent and concerted action" by his government to stop the killings. Amnesty said the murders appear to have been carried out by militiamen and relatives of the victims, after being incited by religious leaders. Homosexuality has always been taboo in the country, but a surge of killings followed religious leaders' sermons condemning "deviancy".

Killing of gay Iraqis shouldn't be ignored - www.denverpost.com 04/13/09 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
In the past two months, at least 25 men and boys were killed, usually by multiple gunshots, their bodies often left with signs in Arabic that declared: "pervert."<br><br>
Meanwhile, Iraqis are murdered for many reasons, greatly complicating the situation on the ground. It's hard to imagine the country will have much stability or peace if it can't quell such things as religious killings and the so-called "honor killings" of women who may have had extramarital relations.

Thailand: Without equality, tolerance for gays is just a myth - www.nationmultimedia.com- 04/03/09 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
THERE'S a myth, especially among foreigners, that Thailand is "tolerant" towards gays and transgenders. After all, hardly a day goes by without one seeing ladyboys or katoeys (male-to-female transgenders). Most Thais also like to believe in such a feel-good story, as well as spin it to foreigners. To say anything to the contrary will cause a loss of face. However, that kind of simplistic rationale based on visibility is akin to reasoning that Thai women must have equal rights to men because every other Thai appears to be female. <br><br>Even long-term foreign residents aren't likely to have heard about, for example, a bisexual woman who was burned alive in 2006, and the rape, murder and burning of a lesbian last year. Both cases were reported only in the Thai dailies. Rarely will they pick up stories on constant harassment and discrimination against katoeys, whose life options are severely limited. These "non-issues" are often brushed aside by Thais.
