244. LGBT Jamaicans & Allies Stand for Tolerance - by J-FLAG, on 06/17/11 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Since January 2011, J-FLAG has documented 42 homophobic assaults ranging from death threats to savage beatings of individuals at the hands of enraged mobs. The majority of these have been meted out to young males between 18 and 29 years. Sadly, in February, policemen and women in one incident in Montego Bay perpetrated eight of the human rights violations documented by J-FLAG this year. Many LGBT Jamaicans live in constant fear of being attacked and persecuted as a result of the island's entrenched homophobia.

Even children bear the burden of Jamaica?s unfounded homophobia. On Monday, May 30, a youngster, not thought to be more than 13 years old, was set upon in his community of Glendevon in St. James. He was savagely beaten with machetes; pieces of board and whatever other weapons members of the mob could lay their hands on. This occurred because the boy was rumored to have been involved in a homosexual act with another youngster from the area.

For now, the rights of homosexual, bisexual and transsexual people in Iran are non-existent. All sexual relations outside of traditional marriage are illegal and considered to be a violation of divine will.

According to the Iranian interpretation of Sharia law, sodomy is a crime in which both partners can be punished by death. In theory, the death penalty applies only to adult and consensual homosexual partners. Nevertheless, in 2005 two teenage boys, one of whom was a minor, were hanged in the northern city of Mashad for having sexual relations together.

There is a real danger for us. Every minute of every day we fear being discovered because at any moment the police or an ordinary person could figure out what is going on. According the law, a lesbian receives 100 lashes the first three times she is arrested. She is executed the fourth time. For gay men it is different; they are executed right away.
