2584. Jamaica: Battybwoys affi dead? [?Faggots have to die?]- Amnesty International 05/17/04 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
?Battybwoys affi dead? [?Faggots have to die?]: Action against Homophobia in Jamaica

In January 2004, around 30,000 people attended a huge stage show and Rastafarian celebration, Rebel Salute, in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica. Some of Jamaica?s most celebrated artists were present. Throughout the night, Capleton, Sizzla and others sang almost exclusively about gay men. Using the derogatory terms for gay men - ?chi chi men? or ?battybwoys? they urged the audience to ?kill dem, battybwoys haffi dead, gun shots pon dem? who want to see dem dead put up his hand? (kill them, gay men have got to die, gun shots in their head, whoever wants to see them dead, put up your hand).

The problem of homophobia in Jamaica goes far beyond song-artists however. Reports of violence regularly meted out to members of the LGBT community have reached such an extent that they have started to attract international headlines. Action is needed on a much wider scale to systematically tackle the prejudice that inspires the attacks and the laws which encourage them.

2590. Obscured existence of homosexuality and transsexuality inside Kurdish culture; Case studies of Gays and lesbians in Kurdistan and diaspora.- By Kameel Ahmady - www.iraqupdates.com- 11/08/07 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
This ethnographic paper try to give an anthropological perspective on the all too obscured existence of homosexuality and transsexuality inside Kurdish culture. While this has always existed within Kurdish, as any other society, cultural norms mean that it has at the same time been kept as an ?open secret?; everyone knows it happens, but nobody talks about the controversial subject. Because of this unwillingness to treat the topic, transgender and homosexual people in Kurdish society have never been given a recognised role. This also has a great deal to do with conventional gender roles; although male homosexuality has been informally known about, if not discussed, lesbianism and transsexuality is much less tolerated, even informally. But with the rise of feminism for Kurdish women, they are now experiencing their sexuality too through this paradigm. There is a scarcity of written records about the issue of homosexuality in Kurdish society as well, although there have been attempts by Kurdish or non-Kurdish writers to research this cultural taboo. This leaves little documentation to reference. As Kurdish society in all parts of Kurdistan and throughout diaspora struggles ? sometimes violently - with modernity and the changing gender roles which follow, there remains a big challenge to the acceptance of open practice of sexual freedom. In what follows I show some case studies of individuals whom I interviewed for this research, and explore their motivations and practices of homosexuality, as well as the ways they see themselves viewed in Kurdish society.

But as RFE/RL reports, those who decide to go public say they still face discrimination at work and in society, as well as abuse from police.

Aren't there guarantees in Colombia to carry out the Human Rights of the LGBT community (Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transsgendrs)? Don't they exist in order to validate the rights of the citizens in general? Let us not reduce people to a part, let us not pigeon-hole them or reduce them to a category, let us recognise and appreciate the diversity.?

Rowena Razaq, a SOAS history student, proudly agreed, saying, ?I?m not a Muslim-Lesbian and neither am I Lesbian-Muslim, I happen to be both.? Hana Raizuddin alspo agreed, saying, ?my identity is made up of a lot of things. It?s Muslim, it?s British and it?s Pakistani, and it?s bisexual.?

2600. India: Press Release, Strongly condemning the actions of Karnataka State health and police officials, that are fuelling the spread of HIV-AIDS- kswu.blogspot.com 12/01/08 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Health Department in Ramnagara District spreads misinformation against homosexuals making them further vulnerable to HIV infection: District AIDS Prevention and Control Unit, Ramanagara District and District Health and Family Welfare Officer, Ramanagara District have conducted the World AIDS Day program today in Ramanagra town and have spread the misinformation against homosexuals through public distribution of leaflets. Excerpts from the leaflet include ?salingakama: HIV, AIDSge rahadhaari? (meaning ? Homosexuality: Highway to HIV, AIDS), ?salingakaamigalinda dhooraviri? (meaning ? Stay away from Homosexuals) and warns people to stay away from homosexuals as a way to prevent AIDS. This messages spread prejudice, stigma and discrimination against homosexuals and make them further vulnerable to HIV infection. This is completely opposite to the strategy of National AIDS Control Program, which seeks to fight stigma and discrimination against homosexuals and support their human rights as a strategy to reduce their vulnerability to HIV infection. It is shocking that local health authorities are doing harm to HIV-AIDS program in Karnataka whereas Ms. K. Sujatha Rao (Director General of National AIDS Control Program) and Mr. Anbumani Ramodass (Union health minister) are in the forefront vocally demanding the decimalization of homosexual sex between consenting adults. To prevent AIDS, we need to reach out to homosexuals and support efforts for their health and human rights.
