There are vociferous local demands for the men to be stoned to death. At last week?s court hearing, an angry mob of Muslim homophobes assembled outside the court. They shouted anti-gay epithets and demanded that all 18 men be sentenced to death. Furious at the judge?s decision to opt for non-death penalty charges, they pelted the defendants with rocks as they left the court, attacked the police, and attempted to lynch the judge and to set the court building ablaze, according to the Nigerian newspaper, ThisDay Online. To their credit, the Nigerian police protected the defendants, firing tear gas canisters and shooting their guns in the air to disperse the queer-bashing mob.

A poisonous piece of legislation is quickly making its way through the Nigerian National Assembly. Billed as an anti-gay-marriage act, it is a far-reaching assault on basic rights of association, assembly and expression. Chillingly, the legislation ? proposed last year by the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo ? has the full and enthusiastic support of the leader of Nigeria?s powerful Anglican church. Unless the international community speaks out quickly and forcefully against the bill, it is almost certain to become law.

Homosexual acts between consenting adults are already illegal in Nigeria under a penal code that dates to the colonial period. This new legislation would impose five-year sentences on same-sex couples who have wedding ceremonies ? as well as on those who perform such services and on all who attend. The bill?s vague and dangerous prohibition on any public or private show of a ?same sex amorous relationship? ? which could be construed to cover having dinner with someone of the same sex ? would open any known or suspected gay man or lesbian to the threat of arrest at almost any time.

2793. Ecuador New Constitution- Excerpt: A summary of the articles that have relevance in terms of sexual rights by Alejandra Sarda-Mulabi- Espacio Latinoamericano de Sexualidades y Derechos- 09/29/08 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
On Sunday, September 28, the new Ecuadorean Constitution was passed in a referemdum with 64% of the vote. Those of you who can read Spanish, please take the opportunity to read the full text, as it is also beautifully written.
=====================
Only the relevant sections have been included in the PDF. Ahmadinejad replied: "I said it's not the way it is here (in the U.S.). In Iran this is considered a very -- obviously most people dislike it. And we have actually a law regarding it and the law is enforced. It is a law that was passed. It was legislated. And it is an act that is against human principles. A lot of things can happen. It can cause psychological problems, social problems that affect the whole society. Remember that God's rules are to improve human life. In our religion, this act is forbidden and the Parliament has legislated about it. Not now, 70 years ago. This is something that happened 70 years ago, before the Islamic Republic became --"
