3667. AIDS in Brazil- A portrait in red- From The Economist print edition-www.economist.com 03/13/08 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
BRAZIL'S government is accustomed to being lampooned for being wasteful, ineffectual and corrupt. Occasionally, though, it does something really well. Keeping HIV/AIDS under control in a country where sex rivals football as the national sport is an impressive achievement, and over the past 20 years the government has done just that. Now, however, the disease has spread across Brazil (see maps). Although the total number of cases remains low at 620,000, representing 0.6% of those aged 15-49, the change in the profile of sufferers is taking the fight to places where it will be much harder to win.

3668. Mexico: HOMOFOBIA- odio, crimen y justicia 1995-2005 - HOMOPHOBIA- crime, hate and justice 1995-2005 / Fernando de Collado [translation of 6 pages of the book] 06/30/07 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
This work concerns many. Nevertheless it should begin as a solidarity offering in memory of the victims of homophobia who are mentioned in these pages. The tales which are woven here are, in part, an interference in their lives; nevertheless, in describing the terrible episodes of hate and violence which mark their terrible end, the possibility of giving feeling to this is opened. Because in this way another call to attention is added to the apathy and negligence with which our authorities and a good part of civil society perceive and prosecute hate crimes in Mexico, be it for the questions which appear in this book or for many other reasons in which the social ill-will and rancor are created.

Translation by Jack Siebert, NIJC/SF volunteer

To obtain a copy of the book you my contact
Tusquets Editores Mexico
Campeche 280, Desp 301/302
Col Hipodromo Condesa
06100 Mexico
Tels: 5574 6373 and 5574 6379

3673. Nicaragua: Homosexualidad todavía es criminalizada-Homosexuality is till criminalized-www.cepresi.org.ni- 04/26/06 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)

The most recent incident came one summer day last year. "I will kill you before you get married," the gunman whispered.
