Turkey: Istanbul authorities attempt to close gay rights organization-Kaos GL News 10/16/07 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
The following is a Human Rights Watch press release:
Turkey: End Legal Action Against Gay Rights Group
Attempt to Close Lambda Istanbul Endangers Basic Freedoms

A legal challenge by the governor of Istanbul seeking to close down Lambda Istanbul, a gay rights organization, threatens basic freedoms of association and expression, Human Rights Watch said today.
"Shutting down groups because you don't like the people they represent is an attack on freedom itself," said Juliana Cano Nieto, researcher in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights Program at Human Rights Watch, who will attend an October 18, 2007 court hearing in Istanbul on the organization's fate. "If organizations that defend human rights cannot function, Turkey's status as a real democracy is in danger."

The tolerance scores calculated were among the lowest internationally when compared to world-wide country data. Conclusion This study supports our hypothesis that homophobic attitudes exist among physicians in the Caribbean. This institutionalized homophobia may impact negatively on risk factor identification and consequently has important implications for HIV prevention campaigns.

Argentina: Investigate Transgender Murder and Protect Activist in Salta Province-IGLHRC 10/29/07 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Summary
The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission is deeply concerned about the unresolved murder case of Pelusa Liendro, and the ongoing persecution and harassment of Pelusa's partner in activism, Rosario. Pelusa Liendro, a human rights defender who regularly denounced police and institutional abuses against transgender people, was murdered on November 26, 2006. Pelusa's murder came after a local TV show used a hidden camera to film and then broadcast police asking transgender sex workers for bribes in Salta Province, Argentina. The police have insinuated that the murder involved drug trafficking or a crime of passion but the crime has yet to be solved. The police have also named Pelusa's friend, Rosario, as a prime suspect in the murder case. Rosario has accused the police of the crime and requests an exhaustive investigation into Pelusa's murder. She also asks for personal protection for herself, fearing that otherwise she will share the same fate as her friend.

October, 2004 RESUMEN

During the last 20 years the internal armed conflict in Colombia has cost the lives of at least 70,000 people, the great majority of them civilians killed outside of combat. Tens of thousands have been kidnapped, "disappeared," and tortured, and more than three million have been obliged to leave their homes. In the course of the 40 years of the conflict, security forces and the paramilitaries, aided by the army, have clashed with the guerrilla groups in a fight for the control of territory and economic resources. The civil population has been the most affected by this violence. Not only for having been "trapped between two fires," but because they have often been placed in the spotlight in a direct and deliberate way, for example, in order to eliminate those who are considered to aid the "enemy" or to sow terror with the end result of "cleaning" territories of economic or strategic interest for armed groups or for those who support them. Violence against women, in particular violence and sexual exploitation up to and including rape and genital mutilation, form an integral part of the armed conflict and continues being an extended practice which all sides of the conflict utilize. Women are the object of the armed groups for various reasons: to transgress gender roles or challenge prohibitions imposed by armed groups, or to be considered a useful target with which they can humiliate the enemy.

Surprising Ways in Gay Uruguay- Globalgayz.com 7/15/07 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
In Uruguay however neither the church nor the military have had the same driving influence and the presence of an elite class, with its formal proscriptions on proper behavior, is minimal since the resources of the country cannot support a large influential elite class. The trickle-down effect of these differences, in Uruguay, has been a softening of conservative values and a quiet liberalism that is discreet.
