Politics/Society: Calls for gay rights in Ukraine- by Yulianna Vilkos. (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
With an increase in birthrates and the revival of family values being declared as the state's priorities for the next several years, Ukraine's lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transvestites have every reason to worry that their problems will continue to be ignored by the state.
Nevertheless, activists believe that now may be the best time for Ukrainians with non-traditional sexual orientations to stand up for their rights.
In the light of Ukraine's declared European aspirations, sexual minorities say the country's top officials will have no other choice but to finally start openly talking about "gay issues".

Section 5 Discrimination, Societal Abuses, and Trafficking in Persons
The laws prohibit discrimination on the basis of race, sex, and other grounds; however, the government did not enforce these provisions effectively, in part due to the continuing absence of an effective judicial system. Violence against women and children, trafficking in persons, and harassment and discrimination against ethnic minorities and homosexuals, were problems.

Ukrainian LGBT claim Same Sex Partnership Law- gayrussia.ru 7/9/06 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
The six main organizations of Ukraine have sent an open letter to their Government
Ukrainian gay and lesbian activists reacted to the proposal of the leader of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church to limit in the law the concept of "married couple" to a union between a man and a woman.
The letter comes after activists were accused by a newly elected MP of not being active on the issue of same-sex marriage.
Activists ask for the introduction of a same-sex partnership aside of heterosexual marriage. "We suggest (...) to introduce registered partnership for same-sex couples in Ukraine. This will allow tens of thousands of Ukrainian homosexual families to legalise themselves, to obtain social and economic rights, to feel the support and care of the state" they wrote.

Mexican gays and women seek asylum - National Catholic Reporter , by Demetria Martinez, 01/06/06: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1141/is_10_42/ai_n26689128/ (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
According to the narrator of the film, Claudia Huerta, the numbers of Mexicans seeking political asylum has shot up by 100 percent in the past six years. These requests have to do not only with persecution for political activism. They include persecution for sexual orientation in a largely Catholic nation in which humanitarian laws regarding gays have yet to translate into humane behavior by law enforcement: Those who should protect gays are often the worst abusers of their rights and they operate in an atmosphere of impunity.

On January 2, 2006 the judge presiding over Mexico Cityâs 30th Civil Court stated that the claim submitted by Roberto Mendoza Ralph against Coca-Cola FEMSA for moral damage was not to be dismissed. Coca-Cola had attempted to argue that since Mendoza Ralph resigned and had been paid the wages due to him, the matter was settled. However, the judge ruled that the civil trial was not about âlabor rights but the moral damage the plaintiff claims to have suffered due to the defendantsâ discriminatory behavior.
Roberto Mendoza Ralph was forced to resign from his executive position at the Company in October 2004, for being gay (See IGLHRCâs December 16 Action Alert for a full narrative of this case)
