With an increase in birthrates and the revival of family values being declared as the state's priorities for the next several years, Ukraine's lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transvestites have every reason to worry that their problems will continue to be ignored by the state.<br> Nevertheless, activists believe that now may be the best time for Ukrainians with non-traditional sexual orientations to stand up for their rights.<br> In the light of Ukraine's declared European aspirations, sexual minorities say the country's top officials will have no other choice but to finally start openly talking about "gay issues".

Violence against women and children, trafficking in persons, and harassment and discrimination against ethnic minorities and homosexuals, were problems.

The six main organizations of Ukraine have sent an open letter to their Government<br> Ukrainian gay and lesbian activists reacted to the proposal of the leader of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church to limit in the law the concept of "married couple" to a union between a man and a woman.<br> The letter comes after activists were accused by a newly elected MP of not being active on the issue of same-sex marriage.<br> Activists ask for the introduction of a same-sex partnership aside of heterosexual marriage. "We suggest (...) to introduce registered partnership for same-sex couples in Ukraine. This will allow tens of thousands of Ukrainian homosexual families to legalise themselves, to obtain social and economic rights, to feel the support and care of the state" they wrote.

Kyiv— Scholars of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine have released a statement in a €œprotest against homosexuality, lesbianism, pedophilia, [and] homosexual marriages.” The appeal to heads of all states and churches, which was released on 23 December 2005 and uses biblical texts for some of its arguments, is given below in its entirety.

According to the narrator of the film, Claudia Huerta, the numbers of Mexicans seeking political asylum has shot up by 100 percent in the past six years. These requests have to do not only with persecution for political activism. They include persecution for sexual orientation in a largely Catholic nation in which humanitarian laws regarding gays have yet to translate into humane behavior by law enforcement: Those who should protect gays are often the worst abusers of their rights and they operate in an atmosphere of impunity.

Coca-Cola had attempted to argue that since Mendoza Ralph resigned and had been paid the wages due to him, the matter was settled. However, the judge ruled that the civil trial was not about „labor rights but the moral damage the plaintiff claims to have suffered due to the defendants‚ discriminatory behavior.<br> Roberto Mendoza Ralph was forced to resign from his executive position at the Company in October 2004, for being gay (See IGLHRC‚s December 16 Action Alert for a full narrative of this case)

4900.  Mexico: Kissing Gays Kicked Out Of Los Cabos Hotel Rex Wockner-International News #612 1/16/06 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
A gay couple from Mexico City says security guards from the Hotel Presidente InterContinental in Los Cabos beat them up and threw them and their luggage into the street last month after they briefly kissed in the swimming pool, Reuters reported. The couple said the guards told them, "We don't like faggots."
