Cameroon: Homosexuals Should Hide In Shame - Dr. Kilo- 3/11/06 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Where is CMC on the much-talked-about homosexuality affair in Cameroon?<br>
CMC has sent out a communiqué on that issue. Although people say that it is their human rights to do what they want to do with their bodies, we are also saying that Cameroon has a culture. Cameroon is a God-fearing nation. Our Christian values have no place for homosexuality.<br>
The Bible condemns homosexuality. Our culture does not tolerate homosexuality. On the contrary, our culture promotes polygamy. But a man should not go with a man. Without being judgmental, it is wrong for us. CMC is saying that it is wrong for Cameroonians to be practising this kind of habit. Those who are doing it should go and hide themselves in shame.

Cameroon: Information on Treatment of Homosexuals- www.uscis.gov- 11/21/02 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Query:<br>
What is the climate like for homosexuals in Cameroon? Are they harassed or harmed by the general population or government agents? Are there laws against homosexuality? If so, are these laws enforced?<br><br>
Response:<br>
ARE THERE LAWS AGAINST HOMOSEXUALITY IN CAMEROON?<br>
Article 347 of the Cameroon Penal Code criminalizes sexual contact between members of the same sex with a penalty of six months to five years in prison and a fine of CFA francs 20,000 to 200,000. If the prohibited acts are carried out with a minor of sixteen to twenty-one years of age, the penalties are doubled. Homosexual acts both between men and between women are illegal in Cameroon (ILGA Apr 2000).

Cameroon: it's a witch hunt-by Matteo Fagotto-Peace Reporter 10/2/06 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
A list containing the names of 50 supposed homosexuals has been published, causing a furious debate. <br>
In many parts of Africa homosexuality is a subject that people prefer not to talk about, but three Cameroonian scandal papers have recently decided to bring it out in the open by publishing a list of fifty famous (and presumed) homosexuals, including both male and female politicians, priests, singers and artists. The move has provoked a furious debate in a country where homosexuality is illegal and can be punished by periods of imprisonment ranging from 6 months to 5 years. Strangely enough, however, the debate may turn out to be more constructive than it was first thought.

Cameroon: Scandal of the so-called (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Reporters Without Borders<br>
What is hate media? In Rwanda it was the racist weekly Kangura and the sinister Radiotélévision libre des mille collines (RTLM). Until 1994, in its columns and on air, paranoid extremist Hutus wound people up to commit a generalised massacre of the Tutsi â??cockroachesâ?. In Cote dâ??Ivoire, it is screaming giant headlines in newspapers that meekly bent to the will of ambitious and violent politician. In the ex-Yugoslavia, it was the voices of belligerent Serbian, Croatian or Bosnian voices which galvanised their respective killers. In the Middle East, it is newspapers or TV for whom nothing but a pitiless and total war can resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.<br>
In Cameroon today, newspaper editors have for the past few weeks been boosting their business through outrage, denunciation and stigmatisation of individuals. Reporters Without Borders is worried that this public admonition and personal attacks carry a whiff of hatred. We are concerned because trials are being prepared and they are in danger of damaging a profession that is already in poor shape.

Cameroon: situation for LGBT people still critical-CALL FOR DECRIMINALISATION OF HOMOSEXUALITY -ILGA (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Press release, ADEFHO /
Warning <br>
Douala, February 16, 2006 <br>
The ADEFHO (The Cameroonian Association for the Defense of Homosexuality) and WARNING, a French association working for the prevention of HIV and for LGBT health, declare themselves to be very concerned by the continuing discrimination against and marginalization of the homosexual minority in Cameroon. <br>
Signatory to various international conventions on human rights and liberties, the Cameroonian Government, when reviewing the Constitution in 1996, constituted individual rights as the foundation of society. However, article 347 bis of the Penal Code punishes âanyone who has sexual intercourses with a person of his/her sexâ with 6 months to 5 years imprisonment and a fine of 20.000 Fcfa to 200.000 Fcfa. <br>
This Article (347 bis) is in contradiction with the 4th article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Liberties, and therefore violates homosexualsâ rights. One of the most recent cases is that of 11 men, arbitrarily arrested, assaulted, denied the presumption of innocence and thrown into the Yaounde Central Prison where they have been raped and have experienced the worst possible treatment since June 1, 2005.

Israel, Palestine, and Gays-by Paul Varnell- Originally appeared 8/ 28/02, in the Chicago Free Press (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
The contrasting treatment of gay men in neighboring Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt is well known: Gays are beheaded or sentenced to long prison terms.<br>
What seems less well known, however, is the appalling treatment of gays under Yassir Arafat's Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and Gaza. At least it was less known until Yossi Klein Halevi wrote about it in the August 19th New Republic. Palestine makes rural Texas look like San Francisco.<br>
According to Halevi, one young man discovered to be gay was forced by Palestinian Authority police "to stand in sewage water up to his neck, his head covered by a sack filled with feces, and then he was thrown into a dark cell infested with insects." During one interrogation Palestinian police stripped him and forced him to sit on a Coke bottle.<br>
When he was released he fled to Israel. If he were forced to return to Gaza, he said, "The police would kill me."

Stop the Deportation of Ebana Dieudonne- Cameroon 1/19/04 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Before Ebana left Cameroon he was visited by the police on the evening of 22nd October in his home and questioned on the nature of his relationship with his employer. Ebana denied any sexual contact. The police issued a summons for him to come to the police station on the morning of the 29th October, and said he would be taken to the hospital for tests (anal examinations are sometimes carried out in such cases supposedly to determine if anal sex has occurred. These examinations are in fact unreliable and have no scientific basis, but may be used as spurious evidence, and to humiliate and abuse suspects).

The Difficulties of Minorities in Cameroon: Cameroonian Homosexual in Asylum Battle-By Elie Smith: http://eliesmith.blogspot.com/2006/03/difficulties-of-minorities-in-cameroon.html (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Sammy Diko, know him? He is this Cameroonian musician who shocked many in the
country by openly âgetting marriedâ to a gay White man. The wedding, in full bloom,
raised more raised more than picket lines when Canal 2, a local TV station last
Christmas. Many Camerooonians swore never to listen to Sammy Dikoâs albeit suave
vibes again. <br>
The issue sets our Paris-based Elie Smith thinking outrageously outloud. Now do gays
and lesbians have democratic and other rights in Cameroon. The issues discussed in
here do not reflect the official position of United Media Incorporated, which position is
solidly encoded in Letters of Gold in the Bible. However... <br>
The known is that human rights violation is native to the African. <br>
And on the African turf, bilingual (English and French are the official languages) Cameroon
has a very poor human rights record.

Being homosexual in Cyprus-7/9/06-Posted by grhomeboy in Lifestyle GayLife. trackback (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Itâs fair to say that the classic Cyprus maxim applies with homosexuality on this island, just as much as does in every other context: keep it to yourself and itâs fine by me⦠But it shouldnât have to be that way and people shouldnât have to live like that. Heterosexuals can afford to be glib because theyâll never suffer the indignity of having their sexual identity mired in negative innuendo. They can also afford to be dismissive, because falling in love is the simplest, most joyful experience one can imagine.

Cyprus divided over gay rights-10/16/02-by Helena Smith-Guardian Unlimited (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
As Cyprus canters towards EU accession an obstacle has arisen that highlight the sort of social confrontation the profoundly conservative island looks set to confront in its otherwise problem-free odyssey towards Euroland.<br>
Last week, an unassuming Dutch Euro MP drew attention to the unexpected pitfall by announcing her intention to vote against the war-torn island's EU accession unless it improves its appalling gay rights record.

Gay rights in Cyprus-From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
This page was last modified 22:15, 30 July 2006<br>
Cyprus is still a deeply socially conservative nation when it comes to homosexuality, as LGBT people are seen as engaging in immoral and lewd conduct. However, ever since Cyprus sought membership in the European Union it has had to update its human rights legislation, including its laws regarding sexual orientation and gender identity.

Rising prejudice against gays in Cyprus- 6/9/06 - Posted by grhomeboy in Lifestyle GayLife. trackbac (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
At a time when much of Europe is striving to move forward in a Union embodying the refusal of all discrimination, Cyprus appears to be moving in the opposite direction.Instead of showing a rise in tolerance, yesterdayâs announcement of the results of a study into public opinion on homosexuality showed increasing intolerance of gays in the past few years.More specifically, in 2001, 67 per cent of those asked said they thought gay sexual relationships were wrong. The figure remained the same in 2003. But in 2005 the number rose to 75 per cent, only to be exceeded in 2006, today reaching an alarming 80 per cent. Only three per cent of Cypriots categorically believed that being gay was not wrong.
