AFRICA: Crackdown on gays make the closet safer - by PlusNews on 01/19/10: http://www.plusnews.org/Report.aspx?ReportId=87793 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"NAIROBI, 19 January 2010 (PlusNews) - More than two-thirds of African countries have laws criminalizing homosexual acts, and despite accounting for a significant percentage of new infections in many countries, men who have sex with men tend to be left out of the HIV response. '[They] are going underground; they are hiding themselves and continuing to fuel the epidemic,' UNAIDS executive director Michél Sidibé told IRIN/PlusNews recently. 'We need to make sure these vulnerable groups have the same rights everyone enjoys: access to information, care and prevention for them and their families.'

Nicaragua: An Ombudswoman for Sexual Diversity - by Jose Adan Silva, www.ipsnews.net, on 12/15/09: http://ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=49692 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"At last, homosexuals in Nicaragua have someone to uphold their rights: an ombudswoman for sexual diversity has been appointed to defend the rights of the gay community, estimated to number half a million people. <br><br>
At least 12 percent of GLBT people who are open about their sexual orientation have suffered physical violence because of it. Others said they dropped out of their places of study because of the discrimination they had to endure. A report issued by the Human Rights Ombudsman's Office prior to Montiel's appointment said that the state institutions most often criticised for ill-treatment and discrimination against these communities are the police, the Health Ministry and the Education Ministry."

Saudi man arrested for attempted blackmail of a male student -by Dan Littauer, www.gaymiddleeast.com, on 01/17/11: http://gaymiddleeast.com/news/news%20259.htm (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"A Saudi man was arrested a few days ago over attempted blackmail of a male student. The man's case is now under investigation by the Attorney General of the Kingdom of Saudi. The man allegedly posed as a woman and lured the student to send him 'compromising' naked photographs of himself. <br><br>
Sami Al Ali, an activist from the region, commented that 'unfortunately such cases are quite common in the Gulf States and in particular, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.' He added that 'many men and women, and in particular gay men, are blackmailed for sex and money', making their life very difficult if not intolerable. GME notes that in some cases it is the agents of the mutaween themselves blackmailing gay men or just attempting to entrap them. This happens across the Arab world, where the Secret Police/CID/Religious Police infiltrate chat rooms and gay dating sites. Such incidents highlight the vulnerability of any Arab citizen, and in particular LGBT ones, to such scams as they are indirectly supported by draconian anti gay legislation. GME calls upon the Saudi authorities to seriously consider decriminalising homosexuality which would help solve this pressing problem as well end the persecution of all sexual minorities."

YEMEN: Poverty, lack of education boosting HIV/AIDS - experts - by IRIN News on 01/07/09: http://www.irinnews.org/Report.aspx?ReportId=82235 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"Suad al-Qadasi, chair of the Women's Forum for Research and Training (WFRT), a local NGO, said prostitution and commercial sex work had begun to increase rapidly over the past three years. 'But Yemen is a conservative community which does not acknowledge this phenomenon. This is a problem in itself,' she told IRIN. <br><br>
The WFRT recently conducted a survey on commercial sex work but found that people were not willing to admit to its existence. 'Denying it is a problem as awareness rests on acknowledging that the phenomenon exists,' Suad said, warning that if the situation continued, HIV/AIDS would be rife."

Japan: Governor Should Retract Homophobic Comments - Top Tokyo Official Calls Homosexuals ?Deficient? - HRW, 02/01/11: http://www.hrw.org/en/news/2011/02/01/japan-governor-should-retract-homophobic-comments?print (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
(Tokyo) - The governor of Tokyo, Shintaro Ishihara, should immediately retract his recent statements denigrating lesbians and gay men, Human Rights Watch said today. <br><br>
On two separate occasions in December 2010, Ishihara made comments criticizing the representation of homosexuals in the media and categorizing lesbians and gay men as "deficient" and genetically lacking. The statements were made just before and during Japan's Human Rights Awareness Week, which ended December 10, and were carried in regional and national media as well as widely disseminated on the Internet. <br><br>
"Although Japan does not criminalize homosexual conduct, lesbians, gay men, and transgendered people face everyday discrimination and humiliation from their families, in the workplace, and in other social and professional settings," said Dipika Nath, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) rights researcher at Human Rights Watch. "Governor Ishihara's comments increase the stigma against lesbian and gay people and can promote discrimination against an already marginalized group."

Philippines activists request international lobbying - Rex Wockner International News # 875, 01/31/11 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"Discriminationary acts against LGBT citizens in the Philippines are rampant
yet are largely unreported and not provided corrective measures," said the
activist group ProGay Philippines. "Gay men are constantly harassed by police
officers, transgendered women are not allowed to use their preferred gender on
identity papers, and lesbians are paid lower wages. These are the result of the
lack of protective laws that can punish discrimination and allow the courts and
government agencies to receive complaints. ... We need your help in getting our
honorable representatives in the House of Representatives to pass this bill
through the Committee on Justice quickly so that the entire House can vote this
bill and send it to the president for signing."

PHISICAL WELLBEING OF ACTIVIST IN CAMEROON UNDER PUBLIC THREAT FOR DEFENDING THE RIGHTS OF GAYS AND LESBIANS. Fundacion Triangulo on 01/19/11: http://www.adefho.org/press_note_adefho_triangulo.pdf (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Alice Nkom is a well known Human Rights lawyer in Cameroon and fear is mounting that she may be detained.
<br><br>
In the last couple of days both the Association for the Defence of Homosexuals in Cameroon (ADEFHO) and, more especially, their president Alice Nkom, have both been the subject of a campaign of insults and threats against them. The reason for this is the awarding by the European Union of a grant for ADEFHO to carry out a project to defend the Human Rights of gay and lesbian people.<br><br>
The events started unfolding when a representative of the government accused Mrs. Nkom of crimes against "the state of law, the sovereignty and the independence of Cameroon". Various other radical voices have requested that she be detained. On the other hand the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is demanding that the EU cancel the grant awarded to ADEFHO and other civil society organizations in Cameroon.
<br><br>
But by far the most serious and grave threats have been made after the official statement. Alice Nkom's physical wellbeing was publicly threatened on STV2 Television in Cameroon when, on 11 Jan 2011, Kengouum Celestin, a lawyer in Cameroon, said: "I have friends that have told me that they are waiting to run into you in some dark corner of the city to 'have some major fun action with you'". These words were directed at Mrs. Nkom. The threats have gone "in crescendo" in the last few days both against members of the organization as well as Mrs. Nkom herself.

Cameroon Government Must Cease Persecution of LGBT Human Rights Defenders - By IGLHRC, 01/14/2011: http://www.iglhrc.org/cgi-bin/iowa/article/pressroom/pressrelease/1314.html (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"Alice Nkom took on the cases of young men arrested in Cameroon in 2005 on charges related to homosexuality when few other lawyers would risk it. No ally of the movement for the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people has taken more risks and stood up more fiercely to discrimination. For the government to threaten her with arrest is nothing less than an attempt to silence the progress of a human rights movement by attempting to muzzle one of its spokespersons. This attack hinders the tremendous progress Alice and other human rights leaders in Cameroon are making toward creating a more just society. We urge the government of Cameroon to cease all attempts to intimidate LGBT human rights defenders and to protect them from threat of violence."

Egypt: "Lady Boy? : A defense of Egyptian homosexuals? - by Jordan Gerstler-Holton, www.almasryalyoum.com, Sat, 22/01/20: http://www.almasryalyoum.com/en/news/?lady-boy?-defense-egyptian-homosexuals11 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Saad explicitly confirmed what the book merely implies. ?As the homosexuals of Sodom and Ghomorra were executed because they didn?t heed God?s words, homosexuals should be ?stoned to death,? as Islam decrees, if they refuse to reform,? he said. With these words, one cannot help but feel that in the book, Saad deliberately avoided explicit mention of what he sees as the legitimate execution of homosexuals. Perhaps, one suspects, he feared that delineating the stance would go against his mission of persuading a conservative society to become more accepting.<br><br>
With regard to his position on homosexuals, the true sin is unwillingness to change, not homosexuality itself. Believing that every gay man deserves a second chance at heterosexuality, Saad is determined to become an advocate for that second chance by speaking out on behalf of gay Muslims, a group he affirms, that faces more difficulties than any other oppressed section of Muslim society. ?Homosexuals suffer the most,? Saad asserted in the interview, ?and they experience intense psychological turmoil wrought by the necessity to hide.?

?No, I am not a mithliyya?: Female homosexuality in Egypt- by Milandré van Wyk, on www.consultancyafrica.com, on 11/16/10: http://www.consultancyafrica.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=602:no-i-am-not-a-mithliyya-female-homosexuality-in-egypt&catid=59:gender-issues-discussion-papers&Itemid=267 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
The last thirty years of Egypt?s history have told a tale of regression, oppression and the slow erosion of democratic institutions. The Egyptian state, under the leadership of Hosni Mubarak, has been in a state of emergency for almost the entire duration of his presidency. Human rights have been shifted to a back burner in this military regime, with tyranny, harassment, and torture being the order of the day. The Queen Boat Trial (2) of 2001 was a very clear and pronounced display of the Egyptian state?s homophobia. This CAI paper addresses the issue of female homosexuality in Egypt as experienced on a micro level.(3) Theoretical approaches to homosexuality in the Middle East are considered along with the political, religious and social forces which interplay in the lives of homosexual women in Cairo. <br><br>
The ?debauchery law? renders male homosexuality de facto illegal through allowing the state to persecute men who are suspected to be gay.(4) This law does not, however, apply to female citizens and the distinction between the sexes begs for debate on the existence and discourse of lesbianism in Egypt.

Gay Saudi prince sentenced to life for killing servant (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"A gay Saudi prince has been sentenced to at least 20 years in prison for murdering his servant in a luxury London hotel. Saud Abdulaziz bin Nasser al Saud was jailed for at least 20 years. Saud Abdulaziz bin Nasser al Saud beat and strangled Bandar Abdulaziz to death at the Landmark Hotel last February. The Old Bailey heard that the attack had a 'sexual' element and that Saud, a member of the Saudi royal family, had abused his servant before. <br><br>
Today, it was revealed that Saud tried to hide the fact he was gay from the court. Jonathan Kelsey-Fry QC, the lawyer for Saud Abdulaziz bin Nasser al Saud, applied for all legal argument relating to his client?s sexual orientation to be heard in a courtroom closed to journalists. Mr Kelsey-Fry said reporting of legal arguments could jeopardise the case and that his client's sexuality was irrelevant."

'Tiwonge is hiding in a house in a neighborhood of Lilongwe. The house is also used as an office. The houses there are small. The bedrooms are the size of many walk-in closets in the US. There is no privacy and the strain on everyone is becoming enormous. Recently when staff were away one night Tiwonge walked the short distance to a rough commercial area where there are shops, a traditional market, men hanging around fires looking for piecework, petrol stations, a truck stop and several bars. She was recognized and seriously beaten, and had her only valuable possession stolen, her cell phone,' says Jones.
