5363. Amnesty concerned about killings of Iraqi gays- Rex Wockner International News #644 8/28/06 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Amnesty International said Aug. 10 that "gay men or men imputed to be gay" are being killed by Iraqi militias and security forces.
"According to a number of media reports, individuals thought to be gay have been singled out, attacked, and in some cases killed because of what the perpetrators consider their 'immoral behaviour,'" the organization said. "Alleged perpetrators include militias and members of the Iraqi security forces -- such as the Wold Brigade, a special police unit which reports to Iraq's Interior Ministry, and which has been accused of other abuses including detention and torture of Palestinian residents in Baghdad."

5364. Gays flee Iraq as Shia death squads find a new target - The Observer - Jennifer Copestake 8/6/06 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Evidence shows increase in number of executions as homosexuals plead for asylum in Britain
Hardline Islamic insurgent groups in Iraq are targeting a new type of victim with the full protection of Iraqi law, The Observer can reveal. The country is seeing a sudden escalation of brutal attacks on what are being called the 'immorals' - homosexual men and children as young as 11 who have been forced into same-sex prostitution. There is growing evidence that Shia militias have been killing men suspected of being gay and children who have been sold to criminal gangs to be sexually abused. The threat has led to a rapid increase in the numbers of Iraqi homosexuals now seeking asylum in the UK because it has become impossible for them to live safely in their own country.

KEYWORDS - REFUGEE DIVISION - PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUP - SEXUAL ORIENTATION - HOMOSEXUALS - STATE PROTECTION - MALE - FEMALE - BENCH REASONS - POSITIVE - MONGOLIA
The principal claimant was openly homosexual. The female claimant married him. After arriving in Canada, the principal claimant developed an intimate relationship with a man which was tolerated by the female claimant. In Mongolia, both claimants were physically injured in several incidents and did not receive meaningful state protection. There is a paucity of documentary evidence on homosexuality in Mongolia, but what there was supported the testimony of the claimants. There was documentary evidence that homosexuality is illegal in Mongolia, and the principal claimant provided two newspaper articles which indicated a real animosity towards homosexuals. The claimants were disowned by their families. State protection was not available to them. CRDD V98-01293 et al., Dauns, July 19, 1999 (reasons signed August 17, 1999).
