Saudi prince 'could face death penalty for being gay' - by Staff Writer, www.pinknews.co.uk, on 10/15/10: http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2010/10/15/saudi-prince-could-face-death-penalty-for-being-gay/ (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"A Saudi prince accused of murdering his servant in a London hotel room could face the death penalty at home for being gay, the Old Bailey heard today. Saud Abdulaziz bin Nasser al Saud, 34, was accused of murdering Bandar Abdulaziz, 32, in a 'sexually-motivated' attack last February. The court heard last week that there was 'conclusive evidence' that he is gay and two male escorts are alleged to have performed sex acts on him. Mr al Saud denies he is gay and his lawyer, John Kelsey-Fry, says the pair were not in a relationship.

Today, the court heard that Saudi Arabia has strict laws against homosexuality and that Mr al Saud, whose mother is one of King Abdullah?s daughters, could be executed. According to AFP, Bobbie Cheema, prosecuting, said: 'Homosexuality is illegal in Saudi Arabia and carries the death penalty which is still applied in some cases. The country in which any alleged acts took place would have little bearing on the likelihood of prosecution as the Saudi legal system is based on the sharia law which is considered to be universal.' She added that he could be at risk from his own family and from members of the victim's family."

Zambia: Ruling party uses gay debate to disparage opposition - by www.ilga.org on 10/21/10: http://ilga.org/ilga/en/article/mFx2wy91di (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"Amidst the recent tabling of the draft constitution currently siting before parliament, the Forum for Leadership Search revealed that it had information that some government officials have been meeting opposition leader Sata of the Patriotic Front (PF) to lobby for recognition of homosexuality in Zambia. Opposition's leader Michael Sata. Since the surfacing of such information the Independent Churches of Zambia has called for the naming and shaming of those leaders allegedly in favour of the recognition of homosexuality.

Homosexuality in Zambia is further prohibited in the Penal Code, and criminalised under Chapter 87 section 155-9, stated as unnatural offences and bestiality. But Mubanga says 'homosexuality is very hard to prove, our laws state that one must be found in the act for them to arrest you. The government has of course made threats but that is all they can do.' Mubanga further said 'In our opinion the current intended laws are very harsh and bluntly disregard citizens their rights to communion.' The Zambian government has maintained a staunch homophobic stand on homosexuality, with former president, Frederick Chiluba who has previously said 'homosexuality in the deepest level of depravity, which is unbiblical and abnormal.'"

Mexico: Yucatán cuarto lugar nacional en crímenes por homofobia /Yucatán: Fourth Place Nationally for crimes due to homophobia- by www.yucatanahora.com, on 01/19/11: http://www.yucatanahora.com/noticias/yucatan-cuarto-lugar-nacional-crimenes-por-homofobia-10872/ (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)

Despite the programs of raising public awareness carried out by NGO's,state and federal departments, such as the Secretaries of Education and Health, and including, the church itself, this "irrational hate" increases in the country, and Yucatán is no exception.

Actually, the Federal District (DF) occupies first place, followed by the State of Mexico, Veracruz and Yucatan, with the last one, from 2004-2007, having 26 people who were brutally murdered for being gay.

However, according to the National Commission on Human Rights (CNDH), it is established that for each reported case there are at least three which are not reported, in many casees because there is no response from the authorities, and for that reason the social homophobia persists.

Obstacles for the Advancement of Lesbian, Transvestite and Bisexual Women's Rights in Colombia - by Colombia Diversa on 03/12/10: http://ilga.org/ilga/static/uploads/files/2010/3/5/05111628.pdf (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"During the year 2009 threatening pamphlets were distributed in the cities of Colombia against
vulnerable populations, among them young women, drug consumers, prostitutes, transvestites and
people living with HIV/AIDS. Particularly in the municipality of Chinu-Cordoba a pamphlet was
distributed and signed by the 'Cleansing group of Cordoba and Sucre' which addressed by name a
group of lesbians who they threatened to murder, if they did not leave that place.

The needs and rights of lesbian, bisexual and
transgender women are not acknowledged, studied or contemplated by the public policies of
the Government. It was established that lesbian and bisexual women are afraid to recognize
their sexual orientation to medical personnel and for the case of transvestite women, their
specific needs are not recognized by medical personnel, which implies a deficient medical
attention, adding to the low subscription to the social security system in health by the latter."

"The recognition of the rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual and intersexual (LGBTI) community is one of the big outstanding things of the Mexican government, pointed out the Human Rights Committee of the United Nations, after presenting its "final observations"of the 5th Rerport that the Mexican government presented before the organization."
The fact that a pronouncement exists does not guarantee that they will follow through with the recommendations, but it is a big step that the UN considers the recognition of the rights of the LGBTI community as something fundamental," considered Andrea Cerami, lawyer with the Legal Assistance for Human Rights (Asilegal), one of the organizations of the civil society which has pursued the 5th Examination before the Committee of Human Rights of the United Nations."
