Presidente de Nicaragua en contra de uniones de homosexuales- Allberto Najera ? (Anodis) (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
NIcaraguan president against homosexual unions

Gay Dominican Republic:New Surprises and Old Fears (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Intro: Only a couple of days in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic and the oldest city in the Americas, are needed to see the lively gay venues and the lesbigay spirit that is here. The trendy music places that beat late innto the night are, however, only the louder tip of a more subdued community of health educators, closeted intellectuals and quiet gay businessmen who all live in a conservative political milieu that inhibits most LGBT people from being more active as advocates. And it doesn't help that the local Catholic Cardinal has some oppressively medieval ideas about gays. But there is vital gay energy here despite the opposition and LGBT organizations continue to form.
An in-depth analysis of the LGBT cultural, social and political scene in Domincan Republic can be read at Dominican Republic Report by Professor/Activist Jacqueline Polanco

Lesbian and Gay Dominican Republic (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
http://www.gaytimes.co.uk/gt/listings.asp?CID=336&action=ShowCountry
There is a decent gay scene in Santo Domingo with quite a few bars, cafes, clubs and gay accomodation. Some of the clubs have strippers and drag shows. Reports from Santo Domingo suggest the scene is warm and friendly. Certainly one of the better destinations in the Carribean. There are no reports of harrassment towards gays and with favourable laws on homosexuality gay and lesbian visitors will feel very comfortable here

As in many countries that make up Latin America, the Catholic Church in the Dominican Republic has an overwhelming influence on society. Catholic concepts, ideas and dogmas produce a fundamental core of social beliefs professed by the Dominican people. The Catholic Church and the Dominican State have utilized each other to reinforce their positions of power in society. Because of this relationship, the conservative mentality of the traditional Catholic Church marks aspects of social life in a more evident way than in many other countries. The conservative position of certain sectors inside the Dominican government, due to an authoritarian past, has purported to deny basic rights to persons that belong to the GLBT community, rights that are recognized without any discussion when referring to persons who are considere

Are gays in Syria that correspond with GayMiddleEast.com being threatened ? Gaymiddleeast.com (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Is it possible that the Syrian authorities have threatened gays in Syria that have corresponded with GayMiddleEast.com? As we cannot ask the gays in Syria if indeed they really have been threatened, we cannot present you with a concrete answer. However, we will present to you the developing situation.
Lately, following a real "wake up" of the gay community in Syria, GayMiddleEast.com has received many e mails from readers in Syria wanting to put up personal ads on the site. However, few were willing to write a few lines about gay life and conditions in Syria. The letter we received from one Syria man on July 8, 2003 invoked many reactions. We also read with interest the article that appeared on August 7, 2003 on the internet site of Al Bawada. In this article, the writer speaks of suppression by the police, arrests of gays in Syria that were simply to "keep the gays in their place." As he wrote, "Sometimes the police come and if the guys are doing anything "out of the ordinary" like dancing to music, kissing or looking "too gay" - the police take them for a while." Accordingly, this courageous gay person in Syria ended his letter to GayMiddleEast.com stating: "I think the gays in the middle east sure need protection."

Indonesia urged to change attitudes towards gays in anti-AIDS drive -Agence France-Presse - August 2 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
JAKARTA, Aug 26 04 (AFP) -
Clerics and officials in Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim-populated country, must change their attitudes towards homosexuals if it is to be successful in tackling HIV/AIDS, campaigners said Thursday.
The call came from the National Committee on AIDS Control and private pressure groups. Health groups will meet next month to discuss strategies to halt the spread of the disease, particularly between males.
Same-sex relationships remain a largely taboo subject in Indonesia, where conservative attitudes prevail despite the country's generally tolerant brand of Islam.
