Malawi: Country Not Safe for Homosexuals - by Claire Ngozo, allafrica.com, 03/13/10:http://allafrica.com/stories/printable/201003140001.html (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Another person who has fallen victim to Malawi's anti-gay stand is Peter Sawali, 21. On Feb. 8, he was convicted and sentenced to two weeks community service by the Blantyre magistrates' court for mounting posters promoting gay rights along the commercial capital's main road, the Masauko Chipembere Highway. <br><br>
"Sawali was found guilty of conduct likely to cause breach of peace," said Beatrice Mwachande, the police spokesperson for Blantyre. <br><br> Rights organisations are concerned about the apparent targeting of homosexuals. The hunt for gay people will only prompt this "vulnerable group" to go underground, according to Gift Trapense, director of human rights organisation the Centre for the Development of People.

How religious leaders fuel homophobia in Burundi - Jerina Chendze Messie - mask.org.za - 06/03/10 : http://www.mask.org.za/how-religious-leaders-fuel-homophobia- in-burundi/ (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
The report states that religious leaders, by uttering hate speech against homosexuals and by describing homosexuality with words such as "ignoble practices", "abnormality", or "practices against nature", have knowingly "contributed in fuelling homophobia in a country where homosexuals are already struggling to live peacefully with their families and the general community due to unacceptance and discrimination. <br><br>
In order to assess the role played by religious groups when the anti
homosexuality bill was proposed and promulgated MOLI interviewed the leaders and one of them Monsignor Justin Nzoyisaba from the United Methodist Church, in the report, was quoted saying "homosexuality is indeed an illness, a vice introduced in Africa by westerners".

Saudi Arabia bans employment of gay, lesbian Filipino workers - by News Editor, www.fridae.com, on 06/10/10: http://www.fridae.com/newsfeatures/2010/06/10/10044.saudi-arabia-bans-employment-of-gay-lesbian-filipino-workers?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+fridae-news-en+%28Fridae+Editorial+-+News+%28English%29%29 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
The Saudi Arabian government has reportedly directed recruitment agencies in Manila, Philippines not to recruit gay and lesbian workers for jobs in the Middle Eastern country. The Philipines-based GMA News on Jun 2 reported that the consular section of the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia has sent a memorandum dated May 26 instructing recruitment agencies in Manila to be stricter in screening job applicants bound for the country said to be the top destination for migrant Filipino workers. ?Officials of recruitment agencies who are responsible in conducting interviews of job applicants to Saudi Arabia are strongly advised to screen them thoroughly so that those belonging to the third sex are excluded," the memo read. <br><br>
Last June, 67 Filipino men were arrested after they were found cross-dressing and drinking at a private party near the capital city of Riyadh. The men were subsequently sentenced to imprisonment and flogging but were pardoned and released in July the same year. None were charged with homosexual acts, a much more serious charge under Saudi law. GMA News quoted Vice Consul Roussel Reyes of the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh as saying that nearly 50 other Filipinos have been arrested and jailed in the past for similar violations. The report added that men caught wearing even just one article of women?s clothing could face three to six months imprisonment, and suffer between 50 and 100 lashes with a rattan stick. According to the International Lesbian and Gay Association, sodomy is illegal and punishable by death by stoning under Saudi-Arabia's Sharia law. All sexual relations outside of marriage are illegal, including sexual relations between women.

Country of Origin Information Report: Iraq - by UK Border Agency, www.homeoffice.gov.uk, on 09/16/09: http://rds.homeoffice.gov.uk/rds/country_reports_iraq.html (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"The UNHCR Guidelines of April 2009 stated that:
?The Iraqi Government does not consider the killings of LGBT Iraqis a priority and a Ministry of Justice judge interviewed by Newsweek told the reporter not to waste time on an issue that he considered being ?very rare?. Generally, there is little tolerance towards homosexuality in Iraqi society and many Iraqis, including high-level officials, deny that homosexuality even exists in Iraq. Accordingly, those who commit acts of violence against homosexuals and others often do so with impunity.? [40b] (p194) <br><br>
The FCO human rights report for 2008 stated that ?We have received reports of violence committed against individuals because of their sexual orientation.? [66e] (Other vulnerable groups) The USSD report for 2008 stated:
?There were continued reports of societal discrimination and reported violence against individuals based on sexual orientation. Since 2003, the Iraqi Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Organization stated that 430 gay men have been killed because of their sexual orientation. The international NGO provided shelter for an estimated 40 men between 14 and 28 in several Baghdad safe houses. During the year there were reports of discrimination and violence against homosexual men and women, mostly by militias. On September 25, a coordinator of the NGO was killed in Baghdad by militia members, according to press reports. There were no government statistics on discrimination or on government programs protecting such groups, and requests by news agencies for information have been largely ignored.? [2o] (p32)"

RIYADH (AFP) " A Saudi human rights watchdog is urging carriers of the AIDS virus to report any discrimination they suffer in the conservative Muslim kingdom, the Jeddah daily Arab News said on Wednesday. The National Society for Human Rights made the appeal ahead of the expected unveiling in March of draft legislation that will set out the rights of HIV carriers in Saudi Arabia for the first time, the paper said. The new bill could feature clauses to guarantee access to education, employment and travel, it added. Set up in 2004, the NSHR was the kingdom's first unofficial human rights group and describes itself as independent of the government. The most recent figures on HIV infection in Saudi Arabia date back to November 2005. Then a health ministry official said that nearly 11,000 cases had been reported since the first case was diagnosed in 1984. Of the 10,924 cases, 2,005 were among Saudis and 8,919 among expatriates, the official said."

Translation text at : http://hondurasenlucha.blogspot.com/2009/12/walter-trochez-active-member-of.html <br><br> "For its part the LGTTB Rainbow Association and the TTT Collective of the City of San Pedro Sula, activists and defenders of human rights, denounce that since the coup d'etat there have been more hate crimes and homophobia promoted by the Honduran Religious Leadership in complicity with the Oppressive Groups like the Armed Forces, the National Secretary of Security, Private Enterprises, the Pro-Life Groups, Opus Dei, etc.. These crimes make evident once again the high levels of hate, stigma and discrimination against people of diverse sexualities which we call out as homophobia, lesbophobia, biphobia, and above all transphobia, suffered by those of us who have a different sexual orientation or gender identity from the heterosexual norm. On the ocassion of the loss of two friends this last week, we reiterate that it is NOT ACCEPTABLE that in these last four months, during such a short period, 9 trans and gay sisters and brothers have died cruelly and violently, 6 of them in San Pedro Sula and 3 in Tegucigalpa."

"For now, the 2008 murder of Eudy Simelane, star of South Africa's women's national soccer team, is among the few cases to receive much notice at all. After Simelane became vocal about being a lesbian and pressing for rights, her body was found, gang- raped and stabbed repeatedly." <br><br>
"The struggles of lesbians in South Africa are merely a subset of widespread sexism there. Perhaps the heavy concentration on the male players competing has somehow disallowed much scrutiny of the seedier aspects of women's lives in South Africa." <br><br>
"The country is believed to have one of the highest rates of rape in the world, with almost half of all women raped during their lifetime, according to a 2009 report by the NGO ActionAid International.
