Gay Rwanda 2008: Stigmatized and unwelcome, Rwanda's leading lesbian 'warriors' battles uphill for small achievements against a rudely homophobic country--despite one of the century's worst bloodbaths that resulted from tribal discrimination. The government does not appear to have learned its lesson from history.- By Richard Ammon, globalgayz.com on 03/30/08: http://globalgayz.com/country/Rwanda/view/RWA/gay-rwanda-2008 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"Rwanda is not a good place to be LGBT. As this story was being written, another anti-gay crisis was unfolding as two other lesbian activists from Rwanda were arrested on false charges on their way to a lesbian conference in Mozambique. " <br><br> "When Little Sisters members returned from the COAL meeting in Johannesburg, they were threatened with arrest--although there is no mention of homosexuality in the statutes of Rwanda since homosexuals ?don?t exist? and have no legal standing. But laws are loosely interpreted by those in power, and anyone can be detained for an indefinite time without specific charges. "

Homosexual unions are not marriages or families, says Mexican bishop- by www.catholicnewsagency.com on 10/06/09:http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/utiles/myprint/print.php (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"Auxiliary Bishop Antonio Lerma Nolasco of Mexico City said this week that homosexual unions cannot be considered marriages or families. "They can be called whatever you want, but never marriage," he said.<br><br>
In his homily at the Cathedral, the bishop exhorted the faithful to defend marriage as part of the divine plan, which starts with the union between a man and a woman. Because of the origin of marriage, the bishop said unions that are distinct from this "act of mutual love" cannot be considered marriage.

"You would very literally have to be in the closet to act on one's inclination towards the same sex IF there were any closets to be had in poor Rwandan homes. So I imagine it is very, very difficult to be an LGBT adolescent or adult living here, frankly." <br><br> "So the take home message: there is no homosexuality in Rwanda, officially. Thus, they don't have to ask the gay people to leave - they aren't here."

Mexico: "Tribuna Libre", al más rancio estilo periodístico, estigmatiza a mujeres y homosexuales - "Tribuna Libre" [Open Forum], the most rancid journalistic style, stigmatizes women and homosexuals- by Antonio Medina, www.notiese.org on 10/05/09: http://www.notiese.org/notiese.php?ctn_id=3261 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"The ridicule, morbid and degradation of the subject come together in the journalistic text, and the nude body as evidence of all of the ills which happen to anyone who breaks the heterosexual norms. Consequently "the social death of people who live with AIDS is so destructive and distressful just as a physical death," as has been said repeatedly by the maestro Carlos Monsiváis.<br><br>
In the political section of the same weekly, another noted journalist, infested with judgments of worth amd stigmatizing sayings sch as "daggers," "women with antenna," "bedbugs with AIDS," and "pair of lilacs," tells of the detention of two transvestite men who work their sexual trade in the streets of the capital of Aguascalientes."

"What has changed, however, is the ability of sexual minority groups to come together, to form alliances for solidarity, and to begin to advocate for their rights. Moreover, the open expression of homosexuality, though still restricted in many ways, has been a very recent event in Rwanda and across the African continent." <br><br> "Rwanda?s law is currently silent on the issue of homosexuality: neither the 2003 Constitution nor the 1977 Penal Code make mention of any crime related to homosexuality. Sexual offenses are outlined in the 1977 Penal Code, and include rape, rape of children, sexual torture, adultery, prostitution, and exhibitionism. While homosexual acts involving either sex are punishable if one participant is under the age of 18 and the other is older, as provided in section 362 of the Penal Code, no provision exists for the criminalization of sexual acts between consenting adults."

Interview: Arsham Parsi of Iranian Railroad for Queer Refugees- by www.digitaljournal.com on 10/05/09: http://www.digitaljournal.com/print/article/279819 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
" After the Islamic Revolution of 1979 the theocratic Shiite Islamist regime, founded by the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, had codified the persecution of homosexuals into Iran's Islamic penal codes. Just being gay in Iran became an offense punishable by death. Human rights groups such as AI, Human Rights Watch and ILGA estimate that over 4000 Iranian gays have been exterminated by the Islamic state since the Revolution. Many LGBT advocates are calling Iran's state-sponsored pogrom a gay holocaust not unlike that perpetrated by Hitler's Germany during WWII, now symbolized by the pink triangles gay men rounded up by the Nazis were forced to wear in death camps such as Auschwitz."
