Syria: Sanctuary for Yakob-By News.scotsman.com-03/16/08-http://news.scotsman.com/opinion/Sanctuary-for-Yakob.3882900.jp (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
This document was provided by Immigration Equality, New York, NY<br><br> The son of a Syrian opposition politician, Yakob claims he was initially terrorised by the authorities for political reasons, including electric shock treatment and culminating in a police officer shooting him in the arm. <br>He then describes the water torture and daily beatings he endured when prison guards realised he was gay. Syria says it does not persecute homosexuals, but one beating left Yakob in a coma for 20 days. Faced with the prospect of a lengthy prison sentence, he understandably decided that his only option was to flee. He made it to Britain, where he now awaits possible deportation in Polmont.

Transgenderism in India: 'People just use us for sex' - by www.guardian.co.uk on 07/04/08: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/jul/04/india-gender (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"In India, kothis are men who dress and live like women, who are not necessarily homosexual but often take partners who conform to a typically masculine gender role. Edged out by society they meet in the city's dangerous 'cruising areas', where they are targeted by criminals and police alike; in a culture that outlaws same-sex practices they are easy prey for blackmailers who threaten to expose them as homosexuals. Mintu says that he is fed up with seeing his friends come to harm" <br><br> "I have lost three friends to Aids. At first they were not admitted to hospital because they were kothis and were HIV-positive. Indian people think that if somebody has HIV he must have done something wrong. Doctors worry that the other patients will become infected by them. So my friends did not receive good healthcare. They were put in a room that was dirty and full of mosquitoes; their water supply was polluted and they were given garbage to eat. No one came in to change the bed sheets; none of the staff wanted to go near them."

The gay Iraqi crisis - By Taylor Asen , Zach Strassburger Friday, June 18, 2010 ~ http://mideast.foreignpolicy.com : http://mideast.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2010/06/17/the_gay_iraqi_crisis (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"The consequences for gay Iraqis who fail to obtain refugee status are severe. Since 2004, hundreds of young men suspected of homosexual conduct have been abducted, tortured, and brutally executed with only a cursory response from Iraqi authorities. Our clients at IRAP and others provide appalling accounts of the violence: in one gruesome method of torture (and often murder), gay men have their anuses glued shut before being fed laxatives." <br><br> "Even fleeing to countries like Turkey and Jordan carries intense challenges for gay men. Our clients report being harassed by officials assigned to help refugees; other reports show they have also threatened to deport these men or disclose their sexual orientation. Fearful of new threats of violence and harassment if they confess to local officials that they are gay, these men sometimes chose to stay silent and risk being sent back to certain death in Iraq, as LGBT status is the very basis of their persecution and refugee claims. Gay Web Sites under Threat of a New Law in Belarus A new law forces gay sites to emigrate out of the .By domain name - by www.gayrussia.ru on 06/13/10: http://www.gayrussia.ru/en/news/detail.php?ID=15957 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
?The adoption of this law is one thing but another thing is how the information will be used? says Alexander Paluyan, Chief Editor of the portal Gay.By "From July 1, information on those who visited websites will go to public services and can be used at their own discretion. Because many Belarusian conceal their sexual orientation, an increased control over the internet might simply lead that many gays will stop to surf gay websites? he further said. <br><br>
?For sure, this new law violates our human rights? says Sergey Androsenko, Editor of GayBelarus.By and Organizer of this year's banned Slavic Gay Pride March in Minsk. ?Gays and Lesbians have the right to privacy like any other citizen, and they have the right to access freely any information something that this new law will prevent.?

Helem has been seen as a success story for the LGBT population in this region, and therefore their story will be told here."

Homophobia on the rise in the Muslim world- As recent incidents in Iraq show, in many Islamic countries, gays are ostracized, persecuted, even murdered- BY JULIANE VON MITTELSTAEDT AND DANIEL STEINVORTH, www.salon.com, FRIDAY, SEP 18, 2009 06:15 ET: http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2009/09/18/gay_muslim/index.html?source=rss&aim=/news/feature (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"More than 30 Islamic countries have laws on the books that make homosexuality a criminal offense. In most cases punishment ranges from floggings to life imprisonment. In Mauritania, Bangladesh, Yemen, parts of Nigeria and Sudan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Iran, convicted homosexuals can also be sentenced to death." <br><br>
"In those Muslim countries where homosexuality is not against the law, gay men and women are nonetheless persecuted, arrested and in some cases murdered. Although long known for its open gay scene, Egypt has recently started to clamp down hard. The lives of homosexuals are monitored by a kind of vice squad that taps telephones and recruits informants. As soon as the police have accumulated the kind of evidence they need, they charge their victims with "debauchery.""

Indonesia: Homophobia on the rise - Recent attacks on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender meetings reveal the growing influence of Islamist groups and highlight unequal protection of citizenship rights- by Jamison Liang, www.insideindonesia.org, on April/June issue 2010: http://www.insideindonesia.org/stories/homophobia-on-the-rise-14061324 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"In both of these incidents, the Islamic Defenders Front (Front Pembela Islam, FPI), an Islamist organisation with a record of violent tactics, led the choir of critics against LGBT citizens. In both cases, the attacks on the conferences prompted their cancellation. In their protests, FPI and its supporters denounced LGBT sexualities and genders as not belonging in Indonesia and contravening Islamic morals and beliefs." <br><br> "A disturbing feature of both events was the inability or unwillingness of police to prevent detractors from disrupting the meetings or to ensure the safety of conference participants, even though one of the meetings was endorsed by the Indonesian government. As such, these events reveal the growing influence of Islamist parties in Indonesia and the challenges facing Indonesian LGBT rights activists."

This document was provided by Immigration Equality, New York, NY<br><br> When he finally emerged, a friend suggested that he see a psychiatrist. To reassure him, Ghaith agreed. "I went to this psychiatrist and, before I saw him, I was stupid enough to fill in a form about who I was, with my family's phone number. [The doctor] was very rude and we almost had a fight. He said: 'You're the garbage of the country, you shouldn't be alive and if you want to live, don't live here. Just find a visa and leave Syria and don't ever come back.'<br>"Before I reached home, he had called my mum, and my mum freaked out. When I arrived home there were all these people in the house. My mum was crying, my sister was crying - I thought somebody had died or something. They put me in the middle and everybody was judging me. I said to them, 'You have to respect who I am; this was not something I chose,' but it was a hopeless case.<br>"The bad part was that my mum wanted me to leave the college. I said, 'No, I'll do whatever you want.' After that, she started taking me to therapists. I went to at least 25 and they were all really, really bad."

Bakry told me not long ago when we met in the downtown Cairo office of his newspaper, Al Osboa (?The Week?). Shelves around his desk were stuffed with plaques, honorary degrees and dozens of gilt replicas of Jerusalem?s Dome of the Rock. He fingered fancy prayer beads as he expounded in the way one would to an adoring crowd. ?The American agenda is promoting the rights of homosexuals,? he said in Arabic. ?I am not against freedom of expression, but this abnormal phenomenon should not be presented as natural. Even if it has roots here, it is rejected by society. And by Islam.?
