My escape from homophobic hell in Algeria- by Ramzi Isalam, www.indymedia.org.uk 03/30/05 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
Algeria is not a safe place for queers. Gay sex is totally illegal; punishable by up to two years' imprisonment. Arrest and torture by the police and military are ever-present dangers. The victims have no legal redress. This statesanctioned homophobic persecution is compounded by the rise of an armed fundamentalist movement. Islamist terrorists target gays for beatings, torture and extrajudicial execution.

Lithuania Follows Latvia's Homophobic Outbursts Amid Calls for Constitutional Change by Eduardas Platovas-ukgaynews.org.uk-12/29/05 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
"This is a scandal," the MP said. "My views on homosexuals are very clear and based the fact that I am a doctor, they need treatment because homosexuality is not healthy for human psychology."
"If today we start tolerating homosexuals, maybe soon enough we will accept intercourse between human beings and animals," he suggested.
"Let homosexuals address their problems in closed circles without going public. Lithuania is a state without character. While other nations prevent homosexuals from raising their heads, we give up-- whoever wants to climb our heads, do so, just like rats."

Mali Gay Seeks Asylum in France-Behind The Mask-www.mask.org-03/16/00 (Sexual Minorities & HIV Status)
March 16, 2000: A 33 year old Mali guy applied for political asylum in France on grounds of being homosexual and effeminate. Behind The Mask was confidentially informed about a hearing that took place in Paris in which the application was discussed. The Mali guy told the jury how he had been ostracized in his village. As an aggravating circumstance, he explained his father was the headman of the village, which resulted in people expecting him not to behave like a 'sissy.' According to our source the issue did not seem to interest the jury too much since no questions were asked about Malian traditions and prejudices. The applicant was unable to provide proofs of risks he may run if he returned to Africa and was requested to leave the hall. Therefore the chance that he will be granted amnesty seem to be minimal.
