Form 886, the key application for a Protection Visa, should be completed as soon as possible after arrival in Australia. It is important that forms be lodged within 45 days of arrival or applicants will not be permitted to work and will lose certain other privileges. As decisions can take upwards of a year or more, the right to work may be an important consideration. In some cases detainees must apply within 2 days of arrival. The form should be completed in as much detail as possible. Applicants
will find it difficult to rely on some event or piece of information
later if it is not mentioned on the form now. It is better to put in too much information than too little. If you need help completing the form, some assistance can be obtained from officers of the Department of Immigration, your nearest Migrant Resource Centre or from a Migration Agent or solicitor.
